MOTU 16A

Hi,

Just reading over these associated interfaces with AVB - How long have they been out for? - Will there be a change to MOTU interfaces eg_updating the software in any way or the hardware such as thunderbolt.

The interaces show "Thunderbolt" on a mini_display_port but there is no mention of thunderbolt_2 which would be 20 Gb/s (giga_bits_per_second)_

If these interfaces are thunderbolt eg_version 1 that would limit them to 10 Gb/s which is probably more than enough bandwidth anyway.

I've logged into my account here on a different system as my regular office system wouldn't allow me to log_in stating, "go away spammer" which I am not by the way.

Any info. on these interfaces please mention, thank you. :D

You might get by with 10G. I think it has a practical limit of about 5000 tracks, although in theory it can do more. :rofl:

The new Fast USB 2 interfaces that began hitting the market around Sept/Oct 2019 all boast near zero latency without such artifices as CueMix etc. As far as I can tell, are all using the same DAC to achieve this sonic milestone. The ones I've tested are extremely fast — far more than my 828mkII sans CueMix.

The fastest Fast USB 2 interface I've found advertises a round trip of 2.43ms on a Mac if drivers are installed @ 32 sample buffer at 96 kHz; 2.96ms with Core Audio. There is one TB3 interface that advertises 1.96ms rt and another that advertises 1.0ms (both with drivers), again @ 96kHz and 32 sample buffer.

To put this into perspective, sound travels at 1.125ms per foot (343 meter/second) from your monitor speaker to your ears. In my case, that's nearly 5ms from my concentric D8 to my ears.

Buffer size, in context, makes an immense difference, BTW.

OK, thanks for the wise_crack :D - more than enough bandwidth.

I was really looking for more information - So these interfaces are thunderbolt 1 are they?

Do MOTU have any plans to update the software in any way? -(just asking)_about the interfaces / software interface etc..... Thanks

Why?

The current drivers are Windows 10 and Catalina compatible. Most of the old hardware works with them (if the firmware is new enough) — even though unsupported by MOTU.

No one here knows what MOTU's development plans are. The point behind the crack and the other replies is that it doesn't really matter.

Indeed, Stoivo.

Fraz, you could run 64 simultaneous ins and outs over USB2 at 1x SR's (44.1 / 48kHz) with the AVB line. So, if USB2 would more than cover your bandwidth requirements, obviously TB would meet the spec many times over.

The MOTU site says it does 256 channels, presumably limited by the connections it can make. As you say, even on USB 2 it is likely to do more than mortals or monkeys require. As for whether it's TB 1 or not, since it doesn't say, I suppose it is, but sales@motu.com will have the answer.

Right OK it doesn't matter - :) -fair enough as these are very capable units.

With regard to computers, motherboards, processors, memory, interfaces etc.....the specs and understanding them generally is important and the MOTU units whether thunderbolt 1 or not doesn't matter as the performance envelope is huge anyway with very low latency.

The AVB interfaces connection with RJ45 is great with upgrade easily facilitated for more I/O.
