Yea, that. Factory trained tech coming to fix a key and give us an estimate on Friday. Garrick Ohlsson recommends him. Bracing myself... Think I ought to move the banjos?

What's the problem with the key? I was a piano tech in my former life and can (hopefully) let you know what to expect in terms of a repair.

It doesn't work when pressed. 3rd one we've had go down in little over a year. Patching the others up was a minor expense when we had it tuned the last two times. The tech says he expects to include it in his $215 minimum.

This was completely rebuilt incl. new hammers and strings when we got it 40 years ago from Sherman Clay, the authorized dealers at the time. Action has gotten a bit sloppy over the years so it's time to give it the once over to see what it needs to get through the next decade or two.

If the key itself is not broken, then it's likely a whipped or escape mechanism, possibly only that needs tightening. It takes an awful lot of force to break that stuff (maple, mostly).
