Was working with an older session today and was presented with a dialog when I saved:

You are saving a document created by an older version of Digital Performer.

To open Digital Performer 10.1 documents in an older version, choose "Save As..." from the File menu and select the desired file format.

(cancel) (Save as Digital Performer 10.1)

I saved as 10.1. When I reopened the file, DP started reading the file, then displayed this dialog:

An error occurred while reading from the disk. The file /Volumes/path/to/myFile.dpdoc was not loaded.

OS error:

Unexpected end of file (-39)

I recovered my pre-10.1 doc from backups. Recreated the bug on the recovered file and a different file.

This is obviously terrifying moving forward.

Any thought?

Maybe try using a Save As an older version until you and/or MOTU figures out what's happening

Yep, that's what I'm doing tonight and so far, it's working fine. Also submitted a tech support ticket to MOTU.

Is the file on the system drive or another?

I’m not having this problem at all in Mojave or Catalina.

External drive. macOS Mojave.

I would have been surprised if it was internal.

USB or FW? Your external drive probably went to sleep. This is a very old problem having nothing to do with DP.

I’ve never heard of it happening on TB and eSATA external drives.

Happens on the internal drive as well, unfortunately.

I started a file from scratch last night in DP 10.1. Built everything up and tried all my usual things. Hit save, all good, then I looked at the file with command I, it said this files default opening app was '10.01'. Hmmm
I dbl clicked on it and got that error pane. Wouldn't open until I changed the default app to 'DP 10.1'
Does anybody see this too? I still have all my old DP apps 9.02, 9.52, 10.01, etc on the drive.

Yes, I've seen it. Happened with previous updates. Sometimes the installation doesn't change the settings in the OS that define the default apps. I don't recall if this was something wrong in the app or the OS. But you can fix it easily as you did.

I'm getting this corruption too. I opened my 10.01 file and it prompted me to save it as 10.1. I did so and worked on the project for a day, saving as I went. DP then crashed. I tried to open the file but it was corrupt and I got the error message 'Unexpected end of file (-39)'. I then looked for earlier versions of the file and there was one saved on my backup drive. Even though it had been saved hours before the crash this file was also corrupt, giving the same error. I then found the last version of the file pre DP 10.1. It opened and seemed fine. I was promted to save it as v10.1. I did so to test the process. I then couldn't open the converted file. So this problem is not due to the crash.

I have tried to Load chunks from the corrupted file into a new file so I don't lose all my new work but that didn't work. This is hugely worrying and has brought me to a grinding halt. It also looks like I might have lost a days work which is not great. If 10.1 is corrupting my files should I downgrade back to 10.01? It won't get me my lost work back but at least i can continue with the project.

I started a tech link with MOTU yesterday but haven't had a reply yet. Anyone got any ideas to get me out of the mess? I am using an external Thunderbolt RAID - have done for years with no issues.

I'm also affected by this. There's definitely something funky happening on my system when migrating projects from v10.01 to 10.1.

Certain projects (originally DP10.01 projects) saved as 10.1 then crash repeatedly on re-opening .
I have to go back to an earlier Autosave and open with DP10.01.
Sometimes they open up OK and sometimes they crash too.
I'm guessing this is because 10.1 and my backup of DP 10.01 are sharing certain resources. If this keeps happening I may need to delete 10.1 and re-install 10.01 afresh.

This is on Mojave 10.14.6 opening the projects from an external SSD
Have submitted a crash report to MOTU.

MOTU responded to my TechLink and said they were able to replicate the problem with the files I supplied and had passed it on to the DP devs.

FWIW, I reinstalled DP 10.01 without issue and everything went back to normal.

We are unable to see any TechLinks except our own — just as you cannot see ours.

The dreaded unexpected end of file (-39)
This one bit me in the butt several years ago.
So far 10.1 is saving and reloading fine for me.
Now I'm afraid... very worried.
Saving and restoring files is essential for my workflow.

I am having the exact same issue - any project (I've tried 3 now) that I created originally with any pre 10.1 version will open fine in 10.1 but after saving I get the unexpected end of file error -39. This appears to be a 10.1 bug of major concern...
