TWO 828MK2 - BUT DP ONLY RECOGNISING ONE

Hi
I'm a newbie to this forum but been using Digital Performer since version 4 and I bought an 828Mk2 in the late 2000s and am still using it, now with DP 9.51 and Mac OSX 10.13.6. The Mac is a MacPro - late 2010 model with a 3.46GHz 6-core Intel Xeon processor and 40Gb memory. I've had few problems until earlier this week when I decided to add another 828Mk2 in order to expand the studio recording capability.
I also have a MOTU MTP AV for MIDI, connected via USB to the same Mac.
So I now have 2 x 828Mk2s. Both appear to be working OK from the analogue point of view. Digitally, MOTU Audio Setup recognises both 828s - one as #1 and the second as #2. #1 is connected via Firewire to the Mac. #2 is connected to #1 also by firewire, and as shown in the 828 manual, #1 Word Clock Out is connected to #2 Word Clock In. However there are a few problems:
- DP recognizes 828#2 inputs only, or 828#1 inputs only, never both.
- when DP starts up, it changes the sampling rate settings and sometimes the clock settings.
- I have tried both 828s set to 48000 and 96000 but doesnt seem to make any difference.
I suspect the issue is in the clock settings but this is doing my head in which is why I've posted here. Any help would be very welcome, thanks.
Regards
