Movies flickering with Mojave in full-screen with DP

Post by dix »

I upgraded to Mojave recently and everything seems fine except that movies in full-screen mode in DP (not in QuickTime etc) now flicker randomly, annoyingly - it matters not which of my 3 monitors the movie is on. It's getting tiresome. Has anyone else seen this, and/or have any ideas on what to try? ....It's easy enough to work around by simply not running movies full-screen and resizing them to fill the screen. However when I switch Chunks the movie resizes itself and I have to readjust, which can be often depending on what I'm doing.

Thx!

...no ideas?

Same deal with DP9 btw, so it's not a DP10 issue. I'm guessing it's my view card m'be? Anyone else, by chance, seeing this with a GeForce GTX 770?

All movies or only some? I’d try rebuilding the movie. I use iSkysoft apps for reexporting. Maybe try a lower or higher Rez setting?

Thx MLC

All movies. I've tried various export settings. It matters not what res or file size. Even low res movies flicker. Even while not playing movies flicker when in full-screen.

I am not having that issue in my recent switch to Mojave (I'm on DP 9.52).

I am having (sorry to morph your original topic) a problem where right-clicking the movie window does not bring up the movie-window mini-menu.

Restarting etc. doesn't seem to help.

I finally figured I could access it from the sequence window, but this is a PITA.

Are you having this issue too?

Thanks!

Are you affected by the 10 bit Color Profile issue? Try this:

Go to System Preferences/Display/Color and choose a different display profile. If you don’t see any choices, hold down the Option key to see a list. Pretty much any profile other than the default clears up the problem by setting your system to 8 bit color. If it has no effect, you can reset to default.

I first read about it here.

I see no change on my system but I’m not experiencing the problem either. I have an iMac Pro with a Vega 64 GPU and that may be the reason.

Thanks!

I tried different profiles but still see the flickering. I can't tell if the profiles I'm trying are 8bit or not, but I tried several different ones and none had any affect. Is there a way to determine what the bit resolution of a profile is?

Not having that problem here JS. The flickering is my only issue.

This issue got much weirder.

After trying a new video card and different monitors I was still getting the flickering on the monitor that I display movies in DP on. Changing which output from the card made no difference either.

Here's the weird part. I have my 3 main displays arranged in a pyramid (bottom left and right with DP, the top displays the movie). No matter how I swap things (ports, cables, monitors) only the top display of the 3 does the flickering thing. What fixes it is moving the top display in the System Display Preferences Arrangement config to be below the bottom displays! I now have to drag things down to have them appear on the top display, but it no longer flickers if I keep the Display Arrangement configured like this.

Any idea what's going on? Why the heck would that pref affect things like this? I guess I can get used to it like this, but I'd much rather not have to.

Anything here help? I notice you are running an Nvidia GPU...

https://pdf.wondershare.com/macos-10-14 ... 10-14.html
How to Fix Screen Flickers after Upgrade to macOS 10.14

The resolution to these problems can revolve round the particular apps wherein the issue make the most impactful effect. Users have reported the issue mostly attends the use of Chromium. In such instances, it appears the issue stems from compatibility issues involving the app, MacOS Mojave, and the NVIDIA graphics processing unit.

The following are easiest ways to fix a flickering screen issue on macOS 10.14:

1. Uninstall Chromium Completely

The screen issue has been particularly associated with the use of Chromium. The developers of Chromium as well as other third party apps have been battling this issue from their own end. But that has not availed users of a lasting solution, particularly because the flickering issue has proved to come with multiple layers of complexity. However, it's recommended that you completely ditch Chromium for a different browser if you find that the issue occurs mostly when you’re running Chromium.

2. Use the Terminal to Troubleshoot

This is an advanced method that could be risky for the nontech savvy to try. Launch Terminal on your Mac by opening Finder, and then selecting "Go" and then entering the following command by copy-pasting it exactly as it’s outlined thus:

cd /Applications/Slack.app/Contents/MacOS/./Slack.app And then put in –disable-gpu-rasterization

You can replace the "Slack" in the address with the app that exhibits the flickering screen the most, but take care not to alter anything else as that might corrupt some files on your device.
Note: I have been advised at MacRumors that to do a full reset of NVRAM, one must allow the chime to ring three times before allowing the Mac to boot. Just continue holding down the key combination until after the third chime sounds.
3. Reset NVRAM
If the screen flickers take effect particularly when viewing images while browsing the web, the best way around this might be resetting the NVRAM of your device. Resolving this issue involves rebooting you device. But because the NVRAM is a type of memory that saves data automatically, even when the device is forcefully switched off, this issue will not go away when you just reboot your device. To resolve this issue, switch off your Mac and then turn it back on, pressing down "Command" + "Option" + "P" + "R" keys until you hear some chimes or see the screen blinking twice during the restart. If that still doesn’t fix the flickering screen with macOS 10.14, reset the System Management Controller (SMC) as decribed below.

4. Reset The System Magement Controller (SMC):

This method applies only to portable Macs with an inbuilt battery like MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Details of the steps for resetting the SMC of any other Mac device is also readily available on the web.

To reset the SMC, unplug the Mac's external display, and then turn off the Mac. Make sure the device is connected to the MagSafe power adapter. Press down “Shift” + “Control” + “Power” for a couple of seconds and then release them simultaneously. This resets the SMC of the MacBook Pro / Air instantly. Afterwards, press the power button to boot the Mac, and once the Mac is booted, plug back the display.
To reset SMC on a MacPro, just disconnect the power cord (either from the Mac or from the AC outlet). Wait 15 seconds and plug it back in. Then wait another 5 seconds and turn the Mac back on.

Thanks HC! I've tried everything here, but the Terminal operation with no change.

I'd try the Terminal command, but instructions in this article are not clear. It says:
...entering the following command by copy-pasting it exactly as it’s outlined thus:

cd /Applications/Slack.app/Contents/MacOS/./Slack.app And then put in –disable-gpu-rasterization
Presumably "And then put in" isn't part of the Terminal command so I don't know if that means to paste in "cd /Applications/Digital Performer.app/Contents/MacOS/./Digital Performer.app and then hit Enter and then paste in "–disable-gpu-rasterization" and hit Enter again? Or if I should do it all at once? Also "Digital Performer" has a space. I'm not sure if that will work in a Terminal command or not?

...I'm super cautious with Terminal command stuff. Don't want to mess anything up.

Since this issue is specific to DP I'm thinking this Terminal operation might help, but it doesn't make sense to me. It says
2. Use the Terminal to Troubleshoot

First of all that's not how one launches Terminal is it (from the Go menu)? Second, can someone please walk me through what to do next? ...see my post above. the next steps are unclear in this article. Thanks!

Dix, I'm no Terminal pro either. I concur that the description provided is not clear. Maybe Mike will chime in...

Might I suggest Googling the specific Terminal instruction and seeing what you get? Lots of hits; I found this:

https://www.technipages.com/google-chro ... ation-mode

A Terminal Command is found down the page a bit.

"disable gpu rasterization Terminal Mac" might be a good search term, too.

Also, I'm pretty sure you disavowed using Chrome, but if not, take a look there. Good Luck!

Google searching the exact Terminal command was a good idea HC, but even eliminating the word "Slack" from the search, from from what I see, mostly produces references to the same unclear instructions to fix the Slack.app (whatever that is) and/or nothing I'm comfortable trying in the Terminal.

I tried the instructions in the link you posted, but it had no effect. ...though I'm not sure if I was supposed to swap in "Digital Performer" for Google.chrome.

I don't have Chrome installed, but FindEverything does dig up items buried deep in the OS that have "chromium" dot something in them. But again, I don't want to start trashing things I don't understand.

Its been a while since I had to use them, but still have a couple Mac gurus I can consult. Until then the inverted Display Arrangement config works. I'm actually starting to get used to it! Up, down, what's the dif these days? :)
