Radeon rx 580 on a Mac Pro 5.1 need feedback...

Hi,

Because of the limitation of the hd 5770:
1. Size of the screens.
2. Resolution.
I want to change my graphic card for a Radeon rx 580..
I made some research look like its compatible..

My setup:
Mac Pro 5.1 (middle 2010)
3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6
16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
With DP 10
828MKII

My purpose its to do dubbing voice over.
With 3x screens:
1. One with DP10 (for the sound engineer).
2. Second with the video (for the sound engineer).
2. The third one is for the actors (Good resolution 43").

Any experience concerning the RX 580 are very much welcome.

Thanks a lot.

Lots of info over a MacRumors.com; check the Mac Pro section of the forum. Make sure you power the RX580 properly.

I have been running an RX460 for over 2 years under Sierra. In order to get 4k @ 60Hz from my 4k TV main monitor, I needed to use an active Display Port to HDMI convertor and SwitchResX Software. More recent OS versions reportedly do a better job supporting 4k and HDMI, so you may want to look into the subject further if you need 4k.

2. Samsung S20D300 (1600 x 900) with the video (for the sound engineer).
3. The third one is for the actors with the video (Good resolution 43").

I didn’t think there are any “Mac flashed” RX cards available Tonio.
OTOH, No boot screen is no big deal for most.

I can’t answer whether or not it would run all of those screens, but I would be surprised if it could not. It’s a fairly powerful, modern card and my much older Nvidia GTX 680 runs 4 screens with only 3gb of ram. (FWIW)

No boot screen means that when you turn on the Mac, the screen won’t change from black until later in the process after the video drivers load. This means that you won’t get the white screen with the apple logo and progress bar. That won’t be an issue UNLESS you have a problem during boot up. If for some reason your boot up process stops before loading the video drivers, it will look like your Mac is dead and you will have to reinstall a Mac video card to diagnose the problem.

I’ve had too many boot sequence issues over the years, so I avoid non Mac, or unflashed cards. Just my preference of course.

I use this: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2048 MB and run four screens (2 @ 1080p and 2 @ 2560x1600).

If you search for "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2048 MB Mac" on ebay a lot of options come up, most of them between $100 and $200 bucks. I'm running High Sierra, but the GTX is metal compatible supposedly so I should be able to upgrade to Mojave.

One thing to note: It isn't clear how long NVIDIA and APPLE will support each other. Apple has chosen to go with ATI and you might want to look for flashed ATI cards. I think Apple is supposed to provide system drivers for ATI cards (if it doesn't already), so the Radeon may be a safer choice.

OK. You've a little research ahead of you. Much luck!

No Boot Screen actually means you see the loading bar and Apple logo only after the initial part of the boot process is complete. It is not an issue at all for most. If you are worried, keep your old GPU in a drawer and, along with it, a startup hard drive with an OS that will work with that GPU.

AMD is the way to go if you want a current card and don't want to deal with driver issues. Here is the official Apple Support page, which provides more info on this subject:

Yeah I don't even miss the boot screen anymore. Now that I have an SSD, its even quicker heh. My Mac reboots, sits black for about a minute, then all of a sudden I see the apple screen, the bar fills up reeeeeeally quick and Im at the login screen.

I don't know, if Im having boot issues often enough I couldn't be without the boot screen, Id be worried about my Mac in general heh. I don't have Bootcamp anymore, or any other OS, and booting to Recovery works fine. No use for the option key at startup. If it comes down to it, it takes about 5 minutes to pop the stock 5770 back in. Even did the firmware update for Mojave with no display. Worked perfect. Although I don't know why every time a new update for the OS comes out, the full installer still tells me I need to do the update..

I used a card that wasn't flashed for a while and it's probably not a problem for most people.
I always boot in verbose mode though and often check the messages, as well as using other boot options, so I have a flashed card now.
