Soundflower Soundflower Soundflower

Post by Phil O »

For whatever reason, my system does not like Soundflower - not at all! The last time it was on my system it was installed (without asking) by Finale. I finally figured out what was causing the problem and got rid of it. When Soundflower is installed on my system clocking in DP goes south.

Now that every thing is... err, was back to normal I launched an extra that came with Roxio's Toast 17 - Live Screen Capture. Guess what? It installs Soundflower. I'm getting a little tired of this. Even after I've removed what I think are all the Soundflower components clocking still goes wonky from time to time.

Damn it. I'm sick of troubleshooting. :mumble:

What version? I used V1.66 or something like that for a long time without issues (because it had the 64 channel driver), but after an OS update a year or so back, it went berserk. V2 does work OK for me, at least under HS.

Thanks for the heads up on Live Screen Capture. I spent a few minutes with it, then said “Oh hell no!” Then I used APFS Snapshots to roll my system back a half hour so I wouldn’t have to troubleshoot and uninstall. Didn’t know what happened except that I didn’t want any part of that.

I still use Soundflower now and then, mostly to snag audio for my dad that I can’t find anywhere else.

I remember cleaning it out of the root directory after upgrading El Cap. Don’t recall what version I have now nor how I got it working... but it behaves for me now. Guessing that it’s 32 bit and will cease to function later this year, assuming I have a Mac that can run the next OS. At that point, I’ll find something else that works, no doubt.

Well I'm using a program called Loopback now that seems to be working well. So I'm not going back to Soundflower even if they de-bug it. (de-flower it? )

Now I have to figure out what remnants of Soundflower are still present and causing issues.

The .kext extension is the one to look for.

Yeah, it turns out there were two - one in Extensions and another in StagedExtensions. I just found and deleted the second one and we'll see how that goes.

Do you mean StagedFrameworks? I don't have a StagedExtensions folder.

It's StagedExtensions. That folder has two folders within - Library and System. Each of those folders has .kext files in sub folders.

StagedExtensions is in the Library folder. Besides Soundflower, PACE, Roxio, JBridge and MOTU keep a few .kext files there as well.

I've checked my user and boot drive Library folders, as well as my System folder, and there is no Staged Extension folder to be found, only StagedFrameworks. I'm on Sierra (10.12.6) if that makes a difference.

Well, the bottom line is things seem to be back to normal now that I've found that second .kext file. I haven't seen any problems since its removal. :D
