Using a 896mk3 fw as a interface and external hardware?

Okay here's my question, can I use my "896mk3 fw" as my interface for Pro Tools 9 and still use it as a peace of external hardware for mixing, , reverb, compression, eq and limiting?
From what I've read I think I could maybe set it up like this
My mic will be in Analog input 1 and I will have a cable going from Output 2 into Analog input 2
Signal track input = Analog input 1
Signal track output = Bus 1
Aux track "A" input = Bus 1
Aux track "A" output = lets say "Output 2"
Aux track "B" input = lets say "Input 2"
Aux track "B" output = main out
Any help would be much appreciated, I can use my effects when recording on Analog inut 1 but it will be recorded that way. I would like to use my 896mk3 as a interface and as a insert like a plugin, so I can wet up a raw track and change it on the fly not just record with effects and it just be recorded that way.
