2 Hours, 3 Levels of AppleCare Support — my iMac is obsolete

I just wanted to get a video of my kid’s latest choral work off my iPad or iPhone onto my 2010 or my wife’s 2011 iMac.

Very long story and 3 levels of phone support later, we concluded that I couldn’t do that unless I had a 2012 Mac or later (2013 Mac Pro or later).

AirDrop doesn’t work between older Macs and iOS. Photos through a USB–Lightening cable doesn’t work unless I don’t want audio with the video.

I could upload it to Facebook and record it using SoundFlower or other hack. Really — that’s it???

The solution? My other daughter came home. I used AirDrop to copy it to her MBP and then used sneakernet to our iMacs.

Jeez... :banghead:

OS 10.13.4 killed my 2nd external monitor—I need three screens for my day job. 10.14 will not load because my GPU cannot support Metal.

Somehow, I don’t think my kids will get me this for Father’s Day. Dang!

Why not use Dropbox or WeTransfer?

Apple support doesn’t know why DropBox wouldn’t work nor why Photos transferred the video but not the corresponding audio.

They figured out why AirDrop wouldn’t work—too old to exchange files with iOS but not with anther Mac. I don’t take my Mac to my daughter’s concert in Austin—that’s what iPhones are for.

Too many concerns about security to ever consider signing up for WeTransfer.

8 years is the longest I’ve ever gone without a major hardware upgrade. This issue is only a symptom and it’s one of many. It’s time. A $7k 8 core iMac Pro the way I want is cheaper than my $7,700 Mac+ system was 33 years ago. I may settle for a retina iMac. Decisions...

Yes, it's a PITA isn't it. I depend on a drive connected to Airport Extreme, iOS Files, File sharing, iCloud, Photo Sharing, and stuff like that.

Lots of different ways of doing this, none of which work that well, or consistently.

As a last resort, I have a low cost hosting service where I can FTP things.
