Waves v10 Update

Post by Rick Cornish »

I just received notice for an update to Waves v10. Without getting into a rant about Waves policies (I have not taken part in their update plan), can anyone tell me what v10 gives me that I don’t have with my v9 plugins? The Waves site is pretty vague about this.

Thanks for the heads-up. I didn't know they already have an update.
I don't see much information about this new version. Apparently they tout future-proofing by keeping the plugins updated, and they give you free new ones as they upgrade the bundles. I've gotten quite a few plugins from them like this/
Waves wrote:Waves V10. Update to V10 to future-proof your sessions, ensure continued compatibility, enjoy plugin updates and full technical support, and get new plugins added to premium bundles.
Most importantly, perhaps THIS is a good time to do the update to V10 for people whose WUP is still valid.
I haven't been WUPed for a while, since I keep getting new stuff from them.

Maybe I should do this soon too. I think I have an SSL E console plug that WUP is about to expire for.

Okay... deleting all my prior panicked posts. None of my Waves worked after updating to v10. I guess my licenses weren't any good. I downloaded offline v9 installer and re-installed my plugs I had v9 licenses for. None of them appeared... not even a "Waves" directory in my plug-ins list in DP. WaveShell was present in AU folder. Had to search for this file:

user/Library/Preferences/com.motu.MotuAudioSystem/Audio Unit Info Cache 64-bit

I have deleted it and now doing a mass re-scan of my AU plugs hoping DP will SEE the WaveShell plug in my Components folder again. Ugh. Wasn't like I had anything else to do today. Really should have made a disk image I guess.

I'm just fit to be tied at this point!! I've run the offline installer, WaveShell is in my Components folder... my version 9 licenses are on my system via attached USB drive and I have NO WAVES PLUGS ANYWHERE!!!

Thank you WAVES!!!! I really, REALLY should have made a disk image before I started this. I have one, but it's months old and I don't know how far I will have to roll back. Tech support message sent to Waves. Crap.

Okay... well I remembered I can mount and navigate a "sparse" disc image, and found one of my startup disk from May 2017 and manually restored my Waves folder in the Applications Folder with Version 9.91 and also copied the WaveShell 9.91 over. Something seems wrong with the WaveShell 9.92 that Waves' new offline installer, named "Waves Central L" installs. So far I only have one Waves plug that I obviously purchased AFTER I made the disc image and that is the EMI TG12345 Channel Strip. I may have to just chalk that one up as a loss unless anyone out there has the 9.91 version of the raw .component for that plug they could send me? Ugh... lesson learned. Make a disc image before doing anything like this again!

Okay... well I'm back and a little better before. I guess version 10 plugs co-exist with version 9 plugs. Like before the 9.92 Waveshell doesn't seem to be working for me. I reverted to that version from a disc image. I then went to Waves.com and figured out which plugs were still under WUP and then updated JUST THOSE plugs to v10. All seemed good until the Waves Central (v10) thought my Manny Marroquin plugs could be updated when they couldn't. They then wouldn't pass AU validation. Had to uninstall the v10 plugs, and then temporarily move the WaveShell 10 from Component folder so DP would re-scan the v9 MM plugs, and then put it back.

Good Gosh. I think I'm finally made whole again and then updated to v10 for the plugs that were eligible. Must be just me, but I find the whole Waves thing confusing. Also, I still don't know why the offline v9 installer just doesn't seem to work for me. Running it installs the WaveShell 9.92 and that's just "no-go" for me in DP 9.52. Yikes.

You can bet I'm making a new boot disk image right now!

I'm so sorry you went through all that, James!

I feel a little guilt because it was my suggestion... :(

I will do it myself tonight.
My last big Waves upgrade, to V9, was perfect and easy. I'm still with El Capitan, so hopefully I'll be able to recreate the experience (mine, not yours :) ).

Not your fault! I upgraded the eligible plug-ins to v10 and made a disk image. Somewhere along the line something went South. It makes my brain hurt. I know I had to log in to my account at waves.com and then click the link to upgrade eligible plugs to v10 licenses and then at that point they appeared on the Waves license cloud and I could do Easy Install & Activate for each plug. It's all sorted out now.

I am of the opinion that when many of my Waves plugs stop working due to OS updates, I may not upgrade them. I'll make due with other plugs if possible.

In the Waves site, I didn't see a reason to update to V10 other than something about keeping plugins working with current versions of the hosts. All my Waves 9.5 or earlier plugins work fine with DP, Logic, Mixbus and DSP-Q. Do the new versions do anything new or better? Any improvements or additions to packages look like they're covered by the WUP under V9.

"Future Proof"... no such thing.

Though, AFAIK, don't V9 plugs still work on High Sierra?

BTW: I just noticed, for anyone thinking of updating their WUP... Waves has a new way of getting you. Every holiday season or so they put out a few freebies, usually OneNobs, and I seem to have received RBassComp at some point. I've never used them. Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly), if you untick them, your WUP total goes down. Of course, many of you are at cap WUP ($225), but for those fair-weather waves users like me, this can reduce costs.

I will say, maybe it was bad before, but the Waves WUP system seems actually pretty nice. You probably end up paying a lot less than on normal upgrade services for pro software. The fact that it caps at $225 is pretty reasonable. I get that the concept of doing paid upgrades for plugs is a little controversial, but not unheard of. I had to pay $50 for upgrading 32Lives a few years back. The nice takeaway is that it gives the company an incentive to actually update their stuff instead of letting it waste away over the eons.

Not upgrading yet, though. V9 still plays very nice with my system. The moment it doesn't, I'll WUP it up.

For any of you guys doing WUP, there's companies out there that can do legitimate discounts on WUP for you like: http://everyplugin.com/waves-upgrades
