Noise on Violins

Post by beldenmusic »

Has anyone else noticed a strange noise about 2 seconds in the sample on the String Ensembles:Violins 1 sus C#5 key in the low/med velocity range ..it is 2 clicks and then repeats with the loop. It is very prevalent and not easy to miss. I guess I'll have to skip that key for awhile.

Yes, I noticed the sound on several of the solo strings.

I've noticed many artifacts in a number of the presets. Strings seem to be the worst. Way too much bow sound. Some digital grunge. And looping problems. On the other hand some of the samples that I used previously (Stratus Sounds on the K2500 for example), are maybe too clean. So a mix of the two may yield sounds with more realism. I'll find out. And too, the mellotron got its signature sound by the flaws in the process. For that matter, the Leslie didn't do what it set out to do either.

I'm trying to look at the bright side...

Are you guys just being super critical, pointing out flaws that only professional sound engineers with superhearing would ever notice? Or is this a problem that someone who never even listens to music would notice?

the problem I mentioned is quite audible and renders the sample almost useless, please note this is only on 2/3 keys, not the entire violin 1 setting

As for the bow noise, that will probably dissolve into some hall reverb, right? I mean, nobody would ever record violin in a small room and use it in an ensemble (or solo, for that matter) without adding reverb.

For that matter, most orchestral instruments were designed for acoustic spaces, and the noise is what carries the sound. So, if you're accustomed to not using reverb (as in pop sounds) reverb is essential in orchestral instruments.

Or, are you saying that the bow noise even sounds excessive WITH reverb?

That has nothing to do with super critical.
Either you are a professional or not!

The bow noise isn't really that much of an issue except on the solo viola, in which it does seem a bit excessive and has considerable digital artifacts included in it. The noise I am referring to here almost sounds like a conducter tapping his baton on a music stand..very transient and very obvious.

Would someone mind posting a sound clip of this solo viola or violin? I don't have SI, but am considering it.

I bought this package and tried it all out before logging on here. Fresh ears and open mind. I thought the solo violin SUCKED!! Terrible bow noise, bad recording. I bought the damned thing just for solo violin and cello, and it's too crappy to use.

The best Soloviolin you get is in "SYNFUL ORCHESTRA".

http://www.synful.com/

Hear the Beethoven Demo.

I like MSi but in this case Synful is unbeatable. :D

Synful is just awesome at lines. Now if only they make that orchestral section update they've been talking about. Solo instruments are great, but being able to make whole sections of Synful would be absolutely AWESOME. GREAT solo instruments, but I want sections before I plunk down 500 dollars.

synfull

Post by utility531 »

I have just tried a demo of Synfull. Presently also using Machfive with miroslav solo strings etc. Synfull has some nice exprression in terms of switching from stacc to legato but I found the sounds not as good (although they are certainly not shabby-I find it amazing that it is synthesis-the range of instruments is very limited though-some of the mp3 examples I've heard on their site are amazing for solo instruments-flute sucks though) However the traditional VI samples have their own quality which I almost prefer and the sample librairies are so much more extensive. Now if MOTU would upgrade MAchfive to version 2, I would have key switching and have the best of both worlds.

Hi,

You can have keyswitch in M5 using Expert Mode.

You'll have the possiblity to switch between part using defined keys.

Hope this helps.
