My system works. I'm currently on Yosemite. I don't really have the facility to do a clean install on another disk to try it out.. and it wouldn't do any good anyway, because I would have to reinstall everything and only then find out if it's all compatible. I don't have a week right now. And as some of you know, going back with Time Machine, et al, is an all day/all night affair.

My main concern is that I have heard of changes (presumably good ones) in Core Audio. I have a somewhat unusual setup with Core- My MADI interface has 24 channels of analog I/O, and 24 channels digital I/O. The analog goes in and out of my consoles channels, and I use a pair of the digital I/O for the console's mix output, and also 2-track input. My computer audio comes into this 2-track input, over MADI channels 33-34. When I output my mixes, they go into inputs 33-34, which I record into DP. In Audio MIDI Setup, my computer's audio "speaker" outputs are set to this. I absolutely rely on Core Audio for this to work with my RME HDSPe MADI system, that it will let me choose which channels the computer's stereo audio will output to (must be somewhere in channels 25-64 in my case). This is an internet machine too, so the audio coming off the web is monitored from the console.

My desire to go to El Cap is two-fold: I want to use my Magic Trackpad 2 (and loose my Magic Mouse, which I call my Magic Squirrel, lol!), and I don't want to fall too behind on the OS. I also like the idea of my phone, iPad etc. integrating better with the workstation.

But sometimes the newest OS is a dog, and it's better to stay put until the next version, or the next.. I did this with Snow Leopard, jumping straight to the last version of Mountain Lion. Glad I bypassed the agony of Lion.

I'm not saying 10.11 is a dog, I don't know. Just wondering if any of you guys regret not holding out? And also, if you experienced any system audio problems..

I guess it depends on work flow, plugins, hardware, etc. I've read some posts of folks reverting back to an earlier OS because of problems, but everything on my El Capitan machine is running fine with 9.02. There are a few little bugs in 9.02 that I'm hoping will be resolved in the next update, but I've learned to work around them. Any time I update, I do it on a temporary partition. This makes it so easy to revert if necessary. I highly recommend it. In my case, I've moved on to installing it on my main boot drive. No regrets so far.

El Cap fixed a few OS issues and added some great features. It killed some older apps but DP and Finale are working fine and in the end, that's all that really matters.

DP 8.07 is fine in El Capitan 10.11.4 for me.

(I don't have any Wave plugins, so have never experienced any of the problems that I hear about from update to update!)

I don't have any Waves either. The only thing I have that runs in a "shell" is the Slate Virtual Mix Rack, but I have not heard about any problems with that, or with the UAD stuff.

Good to hear about BIAS Peak, as that's a main reason for me to hold back (aside from being mid-project on several albums at the same time).

I'll probably upgrade right before the Sierra(?) release. After that, it probably will be impossible to do so (or at least a major PITA).

Exactly. I just finished a big one, and I'm starting two more. I never change mid-project, so this is the only window I'll have, possibly for a few months.

Oh one more thing- did any of you El Cap guys disable the SIP?

James had to so that one of his peripherals will work.

I had disable SIP to so that I could reinstall Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 and 10. They now work fine and reenabling SIP doesn't change that.

Yep. I did it so that my AlphaTrack would continue to work. The AlphaTrack can indeed work in El Cap but it's a tricky affair... especially if you don't have the AlphaTrack software previously installed on the system prior to upgrading to El Cap. This is because the installer won't RUN in El Cap, and you have to jump through some hoops to manually install the software. I detailed how in another post.

I hate it when that happens. Remember "Rosetta?" Years ago I HAD to install that, or I couldn't make the Altiverb I had paid a thousand dollars for, install. It didn't do any favors for my machine, caused problems until Rosetta was on the scrap heap (actually it was pretty much on the scrap at the time, but Audioease was late).

I must say, this is the most uneventful major OS upgrade I've done. Everything worked except SoundBlade. I had to pay a hundred to upgrade to 2.2. from 2.0, and of course it's the software I need tonight, to lay up a DDP master.

Other than that, there are only two observations I have. First, the computer is snappier all around. Second, the new spinning beachball is, dare I say, more elegant.

I can definitely tell that it's making better use of the SSDs I've replaced all the spinners with.. when restarting, after the bios/firmware is done, startup is about 11 seconds.. insane.

DP and VEP work perfectly. Pulled up a project with 50 VIs blazing, and worked without a hitch.

My only unanswered question is, how can Microsoft Office 2008 still work perfectly with this machine? And if that were answered, of course it begs the question, why can't every application do that?

Ok... Rosetta allowed PPC only apps to run over OS 10.6. That's all it did. The second you update past 10.6.8, PPC only apps such as Office 2004 no longer ran and Rosetta was no longer an issue.

Office 2008 became a 32bit Universal app (Service Pack 1 or 2—I forget) ran over 10.6 or 10.7 and later — still does but not as fast as Offic 2011. I prefer 2008.
