desktop folders default to right hand side

Hi all,

I use a Mac Pro running Yosemite. On my older OS I could drag folders I keep on my desktop around the screen to organize them. With this OS, no matter where I drag them, they just pop back into line on the right-hand side of the screen. I can't find anything online or in Apple's literature that explains how to do otherwise. Is this even possible? Thanks!

finder or view preferences

I had a few files on the left hand side, and if updated popped over to the right for a while :mumble:
