I've noticed a big difference since switching a couple of weeks ago from a LaCie d2 Firewire drive to a Glyph Firewire drive. I made the switch mostly for reliability, as LaCie drives tend to die unexpectedly after about two years, and also tend to be a bit noisy. I did a LOT of research first, and the Glyph drives have the fastest seek time and rated the highest in audio tests (I left the printouts at home so don't remember the URL). Glyph uses Seagate Barricuda drives in their enclosures. The Hitachi drives come in at a close second, and are very reliable since IBM gave them up. I ordered an EZquest Cobra+ packaging of an Hitachi drive last week to use as my backup drive. They are also rated highly for audio and video editing. The other brands listed tend towards lower reliability and less robust performance for the demands of audio and video editing, and also don't tend to deal with noise and heat.
