Hiza, Can anyone can help help me out of this pickle? It's going on 4AM over here in Germany and i need to get some shut eye, its been a long day. But before that was hoping i could post this Crash Log and resume tomorrow. I Googled "How to read a crash log" but the terms are just um, another language.

Short story is: installed 500GB EVO 850 SSD by cloning my Boot HD via SuperDuper! then opened some Apple stuff like iTunes, iPhoto, browser etc (after Rep/perm & re-starts of course)... OK. Then opened a DP7 Project & after about an hour i got the Black Screen "You must shut down your computer". I wasn't recording but i believe i was in record mode adding some markers.

After repairing in Disk Utility from my Install DVD i got the "Unexpected end of file (-39)" and the Project won't load. The Black Screen has happened 2 more times while i was trying my setup variously w/ & w/o my 3 LaCie D2s and their USB backups to see if i could narrow it down.

Right now i only have the 1 Lacie with my audio connected and so far I'm still typing. The order for years has been: daisychaining MBP> FW800-to-Lacie-TimeMachine/Samples> >FW800-to-Lacie-AUDIO> FW800-to-Lacie-BootBackup> FW400-to-RMEFireface800.

The thing is, i am installing an SSD with the plan to move now to DP8/9 & this 2010 machine finally in 64-bit. (This is my first real move as i came to Mac at Tiger/DP5.) Below is the Crash Log... and I think the gear listed in my signature will give background necessary? Till i can sort this out I'm wary of exposing my HDs/backups to any more slamming... any info would be really appreciated.

Looks like a problem with Spotlight mds (meta data server). Try ending the mds process in Activity monitor, or disabling spotlight on that drive entirely via the Spotlight privacy preferences. You may want to try and give it some time to rebuild the Spotlight index from scratch again.

One annoying thing about SuperDuper is that it immediately wants to rebuild the Spotlight index the moment the drive is cloned.

Cloning does not install the Repair partition (one reason that Apple and many of us do not recommend it for this use) so the one hour quick fix is not available to you.

Reboot. Go to the App Store, under Purchases, download Yosemite and reinstall. This will not affect your applications but it will install OS X properly and install the Repair partition. When done, Repair Permissions in Disk Utility. (BTW, for those who insist on cloning, reinstalling the OS immediately afterwards is a really, really good idea).

If DP 7 still gives you grief, run the uninstaller (it's in a drop-down menu in the Installer). If you have the 7.24 disk image or CD, run it from there. If not, run it from the 7.24 updater, then your original CD. Install in reverse order. An Uninstall/Reinstall takes less than five minutes. Repair Permissions - this is important.

For DP 8 users, just reinstall the latest version. There is no uninstaller. Again, Repair Permissions - this is important.

Mike, I'm on 10.6.8 ... does your advice apply for that as well?

The DP7 Install disk is in front of me, but have DP 7.24 up-date only in my apps folder, can i just right click it and "burn to disk"? (Hate to sound like an idiot but I must say I've never burnt apps, up-dates or whatever to disk.)

I think i understand a little better now... I was advised to ditch SL and get Yosemite.

When i first read this post i thought it was assumed i was already on Yosemite.

...saw just now that Mavericks is a free upgrade, and perhaps 10.10? Don't know if my 10.6 era apps will like Mavericks but there's one way to find out. I've had another black screen today so i think i will just do a clean install of Mavericks on this SSD and keep the original internal HHD w/SL in a caddy in the 2nd MBP SATA port. it never occurred to me to go to a later OS as i didn't know it would be cost-free!
