Microsoft Anti-piracy

Not Mac related but worth knowing.
Apparently from now on whenever you go to Microsoft's site to download an upgrade they will scan your entire hard drive looking for pirated software. And you will have no choice but to let them if you wish to download an upgrade or patch.

Big Brother Bill...

Makes me glad to use Apple. I'm all for stopping piracy. Just a couple of days ago I informed MOTU of a guy on EBay selling DP4 on Non Original discs but this is a little too extreme for my tastes.

Edit- I saw this on the news tonite and don't know if they've implemented it yet.

That nothing. Check THIS out! Serial numbers and date and times are "nearly invisibly" printed on many color laser documents in an attempt to stem counterfeiting. Also infringes on your ability to publish anonymously!

Yikes!

Actually I have no problem with that.

More than often I get called upon to help Mac musicians that have pirated copies of programmes such a DP.

Of course I never offer help and tell them so.

Many Mac shareware software calls home to verify the legal status of the machine owning the software using a ilegal crack registration code. Then in addition updates to the software requires "authentication" allowing the software to call home. If the software is not authenticated it silently shuts. In fact with some of those pirated registration codes the software will announce that fact and then the programmes just quits.

Nothing wrong with that especially when I pay for the software and someone just pirates it. I pay for the author to developpe improvements and some just pirates the software.

Thats my rant for the day guys.

When I purchased DP3 about 4 years ago from Mars Music, someone had previously returned it and put a blank cd-r with a fake DP label in the box! I was pretty peeved. I waited 2 weeks for MOTU to send me a real copy of the installer cd.
