Expanding the inputs and outputs on the 828Mk3 with an 828x

I have an 828Mk3 and I want to expand the number of inputs and outputs. I want to use the extra inputs and outputs to control my modular rig using the expert sleepers plugin suite. The MOTU interfaces work really well for this so I want to expand using another MOTU interface.
Can I buy an 828x and use it with the 828Mk3 or do I need to buy another 828Mk3?
If this works would the best way be to use the 828x become the master and would I be using optical IO to slave the 828Mk3?
Which would be the best option?
I suppose I would like to buy the 828x as the thunderbolt connection seems better than the firewire.
