SATA Hard Drives for G5?

Post by cranemusic »

Hey All,
I've gotten varying opinions about what to get as my recording drive for my new G5 DP 2.7. I'd liked to get a 250-300gig, 16 mb cache. I was checking out the maxtors, but have been hearing some scary things about there reliability. I have been using a western digital in my G4 for sometime without a hitch (knock on wood). Would welcome some REAL WORLD advice, especially for those of us scoring to picture.
Thanks,
Keith

I bought a LaCie external SATA drive.
My reasons were:
1) Fast read/write
2) I need my firewire buss for other things
3) Price

I believe these drives are faster than firewire.

The 10,000 RPM drives are great but max out at 74 Gb

Good luck

Hi Keith,

How many tracks do you typically record and playback at once? IMHO, objective estimates using Xbench and some math are possible and I've done this in the other currently-active threads on hard drive recording on this board. But, we need your track usage. You might want to browse through the other threads.

What Hard Drive?

Hard Drive Preference: Lacie or Maxtor?

I don't know much except that I had my Maxtor internal drive go out and I lost a lot of work which I never recovered. Now I've got a WD SATA and a Fantom Titanium FW. No problems so far.
