User interface issue - moving multiple tracks

Post by MDesigner »

After struggling for about 10 mins, I've realized this is one aspect of DP that is horrible and really could use some work! Why can I not figure out how to move multiple tracks at once? Definitely a UX/UI issue that I think should be examined.

Simply use shortcuts.

-- Select a bunch of tracks (the source tracks).
-- Select the target place where you want to move them (i.e., below another track)
-- Invoke the shortcut (command-option-home)
Done! (Takes less than one or 1 1/2 seconds. Your source tracks will move just underneath the selected target track)

You can also put them in a temporary folder and move them together like that (select the desired tracks and press Shft-command-r).
Bam! Done!

There are other track-moving shortcuts (use Shift-L to open the shortcuts window and search for them there.. You can also see them by right- clicking over a track).

Ah, thanks! Still though, very unintuitive. You know what's more intuitive? Selecting a bunch of tracks, and simply dragging them to where you want them. ;)

Agreed.
It could be simpler and more intuitive.

But we can do those things just fine anyway. Now that you know about it, it will become second nature in no time.

Make sure you let MOTU know about your suggestion.

In a way, the keyboard shortcut is even faster. But fast and non-intuitive. ;) I'll mention it to MOTU.

The keyboard method is 2nd nature to me now. I asked them for years to add that, and I don't know if in the end my asking had anything to do with their reasons for doing it, but I was sure happy to see it. Thrilled, in fact!

PS: Here are the tips from the Tips Sheet on this. BTW, to find this, I merely went to the Tips Sheet, typed COMMAND-F, and then typed "Move." Had them in seconds.
  • Category: Setup
    Move Mulitple Tracks Simultaneously
    Works in: Tracks Overview Window
    1. Select the tracks you want to move
    2. Use Control-Page Up/Down to shift them all one place at a time
3, The real trick to making this quick is temporarily disabling "Lock layout to track order" in the Mixing Board mini-menu.

Move Selected Tracks to be Together

    Works in: Tracks Overview Window
You can also move tracks to the top or bottom of the list by using "home" and "end" instead of "page up" and "page down" while holding down the CONTROL key. That gives you a little more flexibility when moving stuff around.

I don't know if they just added this in 4.6, but I noticed there is now a "move selected tracks to be together" command. After selecting the tracks you want to move, press OPTION-CONTROL HOME. This, with the other move commands, gives you total flexibility when shuttling tracks around in the tracks list. Awesome!

Note the last tip: OPTION-CONTROL-HOME, which collects selected tracks in one place. Very handy!

I think it's still there. I delete tracks with COMMAND-OPTION-SHIFT-DELETE. That may or may not be my own shortcut, but it's within DP's Commands Window.
