Can you run a fw800 hard drive and a fw400 audio interfa

Post by I »

I'd like to hear experiences about problems/no problems with running a fw800 drive and a fw400 audio interface from different ports (same bus). Thanks!

From what I've read it seems that this will work. However...you won't really be using the FW800 drive to its fullest potential (just not enough bandwidth on the single FW bus I guess). It will still work though perhaps slightly better than using a FW400 drive but I am not completely sure on the facts.

I use a FW 400 drive daisy chained between my laptop and my 896HD and have had no problems tracking 8 tracks at a time. I may be able to do more but thats the most I've tried.

Another option that I hear works well is to get a FW card for your pc slot. I don't know any specific brands to point you towards but I'm sure if you search the forum you will find what you need.

-EDIT- Of course I am assuming you are using a laptop as they are usually the cause of people inquiring about this. -EDIT-

Hi!

Thanks for the info. Yes you're right I'm a powerbook user. Interestingly I read that all the fw ports in the G5 powermacs also share the same fw800 bus... this was somewhere in an apple developer hardware note. Although I'm not sure it it applies to the firewire400 port in the front.

Well, to be honest, I'm actually running a Motu 828mkII from the fw400 port of my laptop and a d2 fw800 drive from the fw800 - no problems really. But I'm considering a downgrade to the audio harware and the Presonus firebox I tried didn't work that way - there were clicks and pops. Chaining the devices might have helped but as I've read that the hard drive needs to be last in the chain, I'd loose the fw800 benefit. Well, I'll try the Terratec phase x24 once it's available and see if it works. A pcmcia firewire card would probably be the best solution but they're kind of ugly :-( and I sort of have to have all my hardware on the right side of the laptop where the fw ports are. Well...

PS. i also read somewhere somebody having the problem with a Motu fw interface. Maybe it depends on the firewire chip which happens to be used in the interface?
