Snow Leo nagging for Mavericks upgrade

My 10.6.8 partition is getting periodic nag dialogs to upgrade to Mavericks. This has never happened before. It just started the last week or so. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this, and what it might mean. Could it be the end of Apple support?

Apple never announces dropped support for any OS. OTOH, the last pieces of hardware sold with 10.6 are coming upon their 3 year anniversary - my wife's iMac in August. This means that AppleCare for 10.6 is ending soon.
At some point, there will be no more security updates.
Apple really wants you to update to 10.9. That's why it's free.

Same here, cuttime. At first I thought it was some malware or a virus. I'm very happy with my system and don't need to be badgered with these intrusive messages popping up on my computer.

Thanks for the input. Well, I have Mavericks on another partition, just not on my music drive. I guess I'm looking for a way to turn these notifications off, as they have popped up at some very inopportune moments.

It's been a while since I've used SL, so I don't remember if there is a setting in System Preferences to send Apple "Diagnostics & Usage." If so, try turning that off.
Alternatively (or additionally) if you have Little Snitch, try blocking connections to Apple when booted into SL and see if that helps.

Software Update is what is sending the messages. Since it also notifies you of security and other updates, are you certain that you want to block such notices?

I also have it turned off in preferences, and just check manually now and then.

I've always checked for updates manually, so I really don't understand the mechanism by which this happens.

I don't have SL on any macs right now, so I don't recall the specifics, but you should find it in system preferences somewhere. In 10.9 it's in App Store prefs.

I think it is not about security but about an upgrade that will bring planned obsolesce into peripheral software. That has always been a business model of Apple.

Yes, I'm quite certain. When I'm in a session, recording, the last thing I need is a window popping up while I'm working. People in the room are looking at the screen. It could potentially disrupt the recording process. The chances may be small, but I'm not willing to take the risk. My work is much too important to me. That's why I always use the manual option.
So if you say Software Update is doing it, obviously the manual option isn't very manual anymore. That stinks.

The same about the iTunes update. If you check do not show again it still asks every time I open it.

what version of iTunes are you guys on? 10/ 11? Are you logged on at all times?
I'm still on iTunes 9.x, and they just dumped iTunes radio. Now I'll have to update to v10. I hear v11 sucks?
I never get any nags from Apple- SU is on manual, though I can't move to Mavericks anyway.
