Mavericks does dictation!

Post by James Steele »

I had no idea, that you could do dictation with Mavericks without any additional software! Pretty cool!

I found out because a Dragon Dictation commercial came on late at night and the Mac version is about $130. When looking for more info, I came across the article below and discovered Mavericks has it built in. Doh! I didn't even know!

A version has been around for a long time. It got a minor boost in Lion, a major boost in Mountain Lion.

Dragon has some features not found in the Mac OS which is why I bought it. For most, however, the Mac OS is pretty good.

I hear you. Works good for "free" for me and I was not even aware it was there. I'm going to see if I can pair the bluetooth headset I use for my iPhone with my Mac and use that for dictation instead of my iSight mic.

Testing testing testing. 1234. Check. Sound check. I'm dictating this with my voice and the Mac is typing it for me. This is quite amazing. I didn't know it could do this, so thank you, James, for telling us about it. Goodbye.

Well now I'm actually dictating with my Bluetooth headset, and it seems to be working very well. Go figure! I'm seriously kind of amazed right now but I'm talking about normal speed it's all coming out pretty much like I wanted to. Wow! I think the Bluetooth headset helps a lot–less background noise.

I went ahead and downloaded the extra file for the off-line or enhanced dictation. Seems to be working pretty well. Fact I'm using it right now. I honestly may do this more often on boards like this one. Way easier!

Yeah, I couldn't get the off-line one to work for some reason, but this is way cool, too.

I have very bad speaking habits. I mumble and do not enunciate well and get very lazy in my speech, so when I just talk in my normal way like that, it doesn't do well (like my message above), but if I'm careful it does very well. It's good practice for me.

Really? Did you follow the instructions at that link I posted? You just click the check box in the control pane and then wait for a file to download. There's no progress bar. You just wait it out. Worked here.

I was using this technology in its early stages a few years ago, mostly for commands like opening apps, closing windows, and a whole bunch of Finale commands. I do use voice recognition when driving quite a bit on the iPhone. But I found on my desktop that it seems to add a layer of "cognition" that delays my productivity. Instead of, think, move finger on mouse, complete activity; I found I had to add the procedures to formulate a thought, then formulate the word, then say it. So it was really not efficient for that kind of process. Similarly, it's "faster" for my little brain to type than to speak conversationally. Kind of like the difference between reading music than saying the notes. Then again, I prefer to create written scores in Finale rather than sequence the parts in DP and import SMF files.

There's the added issues for those opus in cohabitation situations where our partners/others around us are annoyed by the sound of talking to your computer. Frankly, I really don't like talking to, or more accurately "at" a machine unless I'm cussing at it for misbehaving. Siri doesn't really like that...

Yes, I did all that. In fact, I downloaded two languages after US English wasn't working. I've restarted, I've turned it off and on. I went through all the fixes I could find in the forums, but it refuses to work. Works fine online, but now the evil Apple know all my thoughts.

Oh well, It'll get fixed one day or just start working on its own.

I cannot not get it to make a new paragraph, either, though I can put things in (parentheses).

I'll tell you what's handy for me, using it when I want to look a word up but don't know how to spell it. That's cool. I don't have to go through google.

Yes, why I don't use it as often as I could.
