Mountain Lion ... opening apps open at log out?

I'm a newcomer to Mountain Lion. I find now that when I shut down my Mac for the night, the next time I start it, it wants to open with all the apps that were open when I shut down. Safari wants to reopen the browser windows that are open. Just now it launched Liquid Mix.

I've looked in the obvious places. Is there a preference somewhere for this because it annoys me. When I turn OFF the Mac, and reboot it the next day, it's ASSUMING I want it to return to the exact state it was in when it was turned off. NO I DON'T. I want it to boot fresh... clean slate... no apps opened but the start/log-in ones designated.

Also... FWIW, On first boot my fan seems to be going fast... smc fan control says its about 2000rpm. I often have to do a restart to get the fan to return to normal speed.

When you shut down, you will see a check box to open the screens on restart. Uncheck it.

There's also a preference setting. I'm on my iPad right now but someone should know where it is. If not, I'll find it later.

Thanks... I thought I had set that preference correctly. I sometimes shut down with the shortcut key: Cntrl+Opt+Command+Eject. Maybe I don't get the dialog when I do that.

I really don't care for that "improvement." Sigh. :) Thanks for the reply!

I find it extremely useful. I always open a few apps like Safari, Mail, & Calendar at startup so having that automated is great for me. When I'm scoring, having DP and Finale auto open (or when in any kind of project like web design) not only auto-starting but having the app open to where I left off is also a great time saver.

No, I didn't like it at first either, but I really does save time - especially for the OCD members among us. :)

To each their own. I don't like the Mac assuming I want the same stuff opened when I logged out and I certainly don't like having to not just shut down the Mac, but go through and close EVERY app... (going so far as to close every browser Window in Safari)... as well as use Shift+Tab just to make sure I also close Liquid Mix so that the next day, when I fire it up to say, check my E-Mail, I'm not waiting for LiquidMix to load. :brucelee:
