Thanks for the link. It's a bummer that Finale needs Java.

It doesn't. The OS does!

You're kidding, right? Many apps that interface with the internet require a Java run time. I'm certain that, in Finale's case, it's the license manager.

When I updated, all three of my computers asked to install the latest Java run time immediately. I know that it was the App Store that was making the request - which makes sense considering how it works. The Finale developers, testing against a beta of Mavericks, would not have encountered the way that most of us install.

In my case, I experienced none of the issues that the bulletin said I would have when I opened Finale 2011c.1. No check for updates, no Java requests, no missing icons, none of it.

Adobe stuff also asked for it so it has to be in there anyway.

Different products require different run times. Chrome can't use any version of 7 yet though Safari and FireFox can. Some apps require 7 which is 64bit only. Apple officially supports a version of 6 but some apps only work with an older version than the one that Apple supports.

Adobe's license manager requires its own flavor and we know how draconian that LM has become since Creative Studio 5.1. Apps also use Java to check for updates while others use it for web forms and letting you print from those forms. I just fired up MasterWriter and once again, it asked for its own version back. Apple developers have been using it in applications since before the internet although such uses are pretty rare now. I remember going to Java seminars at MacWorld in the 1980s.

Hmm. I didn't know that. So far, Finale is the only thing that asked for it, and it was one of the last apps I tried under Mavericks. The only Adobe app I'm running right now is InDesign, and it launched fine. So I think I'm good to go.
