Well, thought I was a bit lucky to go from SN to ML with no casualties...until my POCO PCIe card did not show up the other day.

Bummer to have to try and replace one of my secret mastering weapons from the last 5 years, the MD3 mastering plug. (Not to mention the other numerous TC plugs using the Powercore card.) But more distressing is not being able to open any previous mixes that use these plugs. Which is many, many, many, to say the least.

Did you try today's 10.8.5.1 supplemental update? This fixed a number of issues that Apple broke with 10.8.5.

Reading the link, it seems that powercore was working fine under OS 10.8.4. The problem is that 10.8.5 messed with the PCIe link that the card uses.

TC was quick to point out that they don't support the card past OS 10.6.8 and that it is not a driver issue as far as they are concerned.

Unfortunately, it is going to take someone having this problem on a machine that has AppleCare support to push a solution through if today's 10.8.5.1 update doesn't help.

Otherwise, since you were on 10.8.4 per your signature, restore the OS via Time Machine. Per the link you provided, that does work.

OTOH, they do point out that the card is not supported past OS 10.6.8. This would tell me that there's something that they know about the architecture, firmware or plugs that makes its future short lived.

Restored from Time Machine back to 10.8.4 and everything is back to normal.

Also, it fixed my USB ports from this post:

Moral? Stay away from 10.8.5.

Also, I was a bit confused at first because I did not remember updating from 10.8.4, but after some research I learned ML automatically updates your machine for you whereas coming from SL it did not. That preference got changed toot sweet. Unless you like your machine deciding for you when it is going to update, turn that setting off. These two things that broke are an example why I do not jump into new updates very often.

Along those lines, is ther a way to stop those annoying update notifications from opening the App Store application, or whatever it is called in ML?

PS: Hearing strange things about 10.8.4, I stayed at 10.8.3...

I know how stressful it can be to have your studio down, especially if you're working on some time-sensitive projects! Pheeeew!!!!

These are the kinds of things that always make me wish I had a backup computer with everything ready to run, just for cases like this...

Big studios have them, but being a one-person studio like mine? I keep great backups and clones, but this post made me think what I would do if x, y or z suddenly break up in the middle of something... Not very good!

Apparently the supplemental update doesn't fix the poco issue. It addressed a minor USB issue affecting bluetooth adapters among other things. There were no mass reports of USB port failure, though. I heard of a couple that were fixed by resetting the PRAM.

Although the OS 10.9 golden master was released yesterday, I think it would be wise to try it on a different HD before committing to anything. That's what I always do via eSATA - I have a 500G drive that I keep around for no other use. Since you have a Mac Pro, it's easy to throw one in a bay for testing to make certain that everything works before updating your system.
