Hi, Ive searched all over the forums, probably ran across it but indirectly. It seams that both the PCI-x and pci cards have mixed results in newer multi core proc setups.

system is Asus m5a87 mb. Amd 6 core 3k proc
8gig ram, running win7 32bit ram addressing unlocked, os will now address 16gig ram even in 32bit mode.
two avail pci-e slots, 3 pci slots (will do 3 or 5v)
onboard sound is disabled in the bios as applicable for just about any pci based ada converter on the planet.

I have a 24i and a 1224 with another 24i coming that I will be using the pci card for.

Many of the plugs and daws I have in use work better in a 32bit platform and some wont work at all in 64bit, thus why I run the 32bit system.

I can get the pci x cards for about 100 bucks cheaper than the pci-e card, but it seems like there is reported problems of the pcix cards working with newer multi-core/hyperthreading procs.

I have ran multiple delta1010's and laylas, recording 24 or more analog tracks in a session without problems on this machine, but recently switched to motu when we moved the studio. any info on this would be handy as Im going to purchase one of the two cards for this system in the next week.

But it's still my understanding that the PCIX-424 is supposed to be fully compatible with modern machines.

That said, the PCIe slots on your motherboard connect directly to the northbridge part of the chipset, but the PCIX slots connect to the southbridge over a contended link. This means, in theory, you may still be better off with the PCIe card.

I run a PCIe-424 card myself on a very similar motherboard to you and can attest that it is flawless at low latency. I know it's more dollars, but honestly, to future proof yourself and eliminate any potential issues, I would recommend the PCIe card.

By the way - as you have an Asus motherboard, here's a tip for you. Asus AI Suite will absolutely kill your audio performance. It seems to generate a high number of deferred procedure calls causing audio glitches. If you do choose to install it (in order to tweak fan speed and update BIOS through windows etc), make sure you right-click on the AI Suite icon in the system tray and exit out before launching your DAW.

Took me weeks to track down the cause of glitching due to that mongrel!

Thanks for the tip on that, Ive noticed that trend on it when I ran m-audio stuff too, my latency was always pretty low, but it does seem to suffer a little on it. I dont overclock because its not worth the risk and the machine is pretty damn quick to begin with. Ive ran very large projects with tons of plugins on both inserts and sends in cubase and the machine performed very well. I think I will probably go for the pci-e route after reading of the need to future proof with motu.
