Weird QuickScribe printing issue

Post by Arceo »

Hi,
I have troubles with printing scores from QuickScribe.
I searched the board and I found that during the OSX 10,5 to 10,6 switch there has been some troubles with weird QuikScribe graphics. To solve it, quickscribe font had to be erased (since from DP 7 it is encapsulated in the application) and font cache had to be cleaned (operations that I already did).

But what I'm experiencing is yet weirder.
When I open the QuickScribe window I see everything ok like this http://flic.kr/p/fKVjxh
but when I print it, or print it to PDF i get this
http://flic.kr/p/fKCH9k

Any idea would be mostly welcomed!!!

I have had this exact problem and did come up with a couple of workarounds.

I believe this is related to the printer driver. (Hear me out.) Even though you are trying to print to PDF, for some reason, OS X, apparently uses the current printer driver to determine how to render certain things.

If you don't have access to a different printer, consider loading a generic postscript driver for your printer. You can even have your printer installed twice- one with the generic driver and the other with the manufacturer's or system's driver. But choose your printer with the generic driver for printing QuickScribe to paper or PDF.

If that doesn't sort it, try going to some different locations with different printers- add the printer and run a test print. If you find one that works, head back to your studio, choose that printer from your list before you print to PDF.

Please let me know if this works for you.

I could be wrong butt [sic] perhaps the PDF is assumed to eventually be printed and to maintain compatibility matching a printer might make sense.

In page setup, you can designate "a" printer or "any" printer. Perhaps they might help?

Also, if my selected printer setup is standard letter and I create a wide format PDF the image is cutoff. Other aspects will similarly be impacted.

Thanks folks for your valid suggestions. I'm not in the studio right now, but on monday I'll try the printer drivers trick first thing in the morning. I'll report back.

MLC's suggestion might work and is worth a try for the PDF issue. The driver issue will allow you to do the paper print.

Would you please try MLC's suggestion first before you change the driver. I'm curious to see if that works.

Yeap, I'm gonna select "Any Printer" first and see what happens. Then I got my second bullet which is to switch printer drivers.

Actually I have two printers installed: an HP 5250c connected via USB and a Konica Minolta as a network printer.
I'll let you know my results...

Thanks

OK, problem solved!!!

Here are the results:
"Any Printer" trick unfortunately (and unexpectedly) did not work but... switching printer drivers gave me joy!!!
Turns out that Konica Minolta drivers don't cope perfectly with DP where HP drivers let me print correctly to PDF.

So my new route for printing is:
1 - Select HP drivers
2 - Click Preview in PDF
3 - Select Konica drivers
4 - PRINT!!!
A bit of a workaround but I can definitely live with it. :D

Thanks again Stubbsonic for your precious suggestion and thanks everybody for chiming in.

Cheers
Arceo

P.S. Is there a way to add (Solved) to the topic title?

I'm glad you got it to work. It sounds like what you were doing was simply selecting different printers from your list.

Just to clarify: when I said to load the generic driver, what I meant was

1. Go to System Preferences
2. Select Print & Scan
3. Click the + button to add your printer (a second "copy")
4. In the window that pops up, there's an option to "Use" where you select the driver.
Choose Generic Postscript Printer (rather than the manufacturer's driver).
[note: in OS 10.8.4, I didn't see a way to change the driver of my printer that was already in the list.]
5. You probably want to name this printer so you can distinguish it "Konica for DP" or whatever.

This way you might be able to skip the PDF step if you want. There might be some printer features that won't be available with the generic driver, but it's possible you won't notice any difference.

Well thanks again Mr. Stubbsonic!!!
Following your last directions I installed a 2nd printer driver (that I called DP-Konica) that I select whenever I must print DP's scores. It works flawlessly and (as you wrote earlier) it spares me the PDF step.

Cheers

Glad it worked. As I said, I went through the same issue before (and others) and got some good advice here on MOTUnation.
