Well, I was just about to take the plunge and install Waves 9, thereby forcing
myself to go to DP8 and leave 7.24 behind for good. Thinking that even though
B4II, G-force Minimonsta, Schwa, Stillwell, and GSI plugs/VI's are still 32-bit, I could just open DP8 in 32-bit mode to use those, then bus the audio
from those to record new tracks and then return to 64-bit DP8 to finish up.

So, one last check of DP8 in 32-bit mode - opened a project I was working on in 7.24 yesterday, 18 tracks, five instances of Drumagog, the usual plug-ins I always employ (Altiverb, Waves, Sound Toys, UAD, PSP). In 7.24, this project opens and plays fine, no problems, even with buffers set to 256 the CPU meter hits about 40%, and at 512 it hits arond 28%.

But in DP 8.04..the memory meter instantly hit red, all the way to the right. Pressing play, playback stuttered, audio dropouts, wiper not moving or moving jerky.
After a minute of play, DP8 ground to a halt and the beachball started. Had to force quit. Relaunches...same thing.

I love DP, love MOTU, but really this is pretty silly, DP 8.04 is unusable in 32-bit mode. At least on my system it is. Granted, I probably wouldn't have much cause to be in 32-bit mode most of the time, but I do at least need to be in it a little bit of the time.

I'm hoping 8.1 addresses this...or perhaps I'll just skip 8 altogether and
wait for DP9. I bypassed DP 6 completely and right now it looks like I have to do the same with 8. And it saddens me, to tell the truth.

There's that word again... unusable. I'm sorry for your woes, but I'm having no problems here... not like you're experiencing. Of course, subject headers with "unusable" in it will catch attention. Oh well...

As I said, saddens me as well because all the good reviews DP8 gets are cancelled out by one or two "unsuable" posts. At least 64-bit is working for you though.

I have to say thought that DP8 is NOTHING like DP6! Not even close. That not a fair comparison, IMHO. Also, I'm pretty sure MOTU, if they're true to form, should have another maintenance release before long. They've been very good about that in past years.

I wonder if things would run smoother for you if you were running ML.

James, I apologize, I should have put "on my system" in the topic. And I agree, DP8 is nothing like DP6. All I really meant was that, for me, it seems I will have to stay at 7.24 for awhile longer.

Moving to Mountain Lion on my Mac Pro is not an option for me at this point because I will have to replace all of my Macromedia software and that is prohibitively expensive. And besides, I'm not convinced my DP 8 32-bit issues have anything to do with being on Snow Leopard.

Oh well...7.24 is still serving me well. My only issue, really, is with Omnisphere which doesn't run well in 32-bit, but I suppose I could simply come up with the Omnisphere parts in DP 8.04 64-bit, track them as audio, and then return to 7.24 for the rest of my work.

So as I see it the real problem is the Macromedia software that's holding you back. DP has simply moved forward where others have not.

I have to ML in 32 bit as bad with the resources, compared with 7.24. I used JBridge a while, but then I can not use McDsp and Melodyne
Now I use VePro for 32 bit plugin to Slate Trigger, FG-X, and Powercore

David... Now I feel bad. You have a right to express your displeasure. I just wish it was working better for you. I'm on Snow Leopard with a MacPro 1,1 and doing okay, but it might be different VI's. I don't use too many of them. I obviously can't go to ML either.

I don't know about that.. MOTU didn't make the software for three year old OS's, they made it for what is running now.. When I went to ML, my DP 8 problems were diminished by 99%

Hey David. I feel your pain. We too noticed our startup templates went thru the roof when working in DP8 32 bit. Moved to 64 and folia. Everything screams.

You can get a <500GB drive at some place like Newegg for around $50 - $60. Throw that in your MacPro and put SL with Rosetta on it with all your old software. That's what I did. Whenever I need to use FreeHand or my old versions of Filemaker or Photoshop, I just boot from there. It's kind of a PIA but it's a whole lot cheaper than upgrading all that stuff. For all my other stuff, ML is great. Even DP7.24 is running great on it.

Phil, thanks, that's a great tip. And certainly would be cheaper than replacing my old software.

I concur as well. While making the move to ML I kept a SL disk ready to go. I should be able to reformat now that all my software is up to date. Damn Adobe stuff can get pricey.

As HC says, 'clone, don't moan'.

Mountain Lion seems to be the key to the whole shootin' match. I cloned my SL drive, and I've booted up a couple times to retrieve things or use my scanning software etc., it's comforting to have.

What I have found under ML is that I can keep DP 8.04 at 64 bit and go back to 7.24 when I need to access or bounce 32 bit plug-ins. On the SAME drive, on the SAME files.

With Mavericks just around the corner there's soon going to be even more pressure to upgrade, and right now, the water is fine.
