Piano Moving

I'm inheriting a baby grand piano, a 100-year-old family heirloom. I need to move it from Santa Monica to Santa Cruz, CA.

Any suggestions for a reputable, gentle piano mover?

A couple of friends have suggested Schaefer Brothers, but they seem to be out of business now.

Thanks for any help!

Here's one:

Call any decent piano store and ask for a recommendation.

Just called David Andersen Pianos...they can't do a move that far, but they recommended two other options:

Walter Piano Transport
(574) XXX-XXXX
Edit: The number above is not for Walter Piano Movers, but rather a private cell phone, so I have deleted the number.
(The very nice lady at David Andersen said that Walter Piano mainly moves pianos cross-country, and doesn't usually do moves that short.)

Checkers Piano Movers
Brian Hanie
(214) 597-3441

Also, that nice lady at David Andersen volunteered to take my phone number and look into some other possibilities for me! Great recommendation, MLC, many thanks again!

I'll continue to share what I learn for the benefit of this forum.

I bet my guy from Santa Barbara will do it at a reasonable price.

Dave Andersen's called back with this recommendation:

Teo's Piano Van and Storage
(323) 585-3651
Teo's quoted me $1600 for the move from Santa Monica to Santa Cruz.

I also called Checkers Piano Movers, and they said if I could do it next week it would be $650...but that's too soon for me. Not knowing their September schedule, they couldn't give me a quote for then.

When I called MLC's Santa Barbara contact, Bob Davis, I found that the number had been disconnected. (I tried the number twice to be sure.)

Oooooops! I instinctively used my current area code. $650 sounds very high Bob moved my 7' grand from Santa Barbara to Burbank for $350 in 2000.

Call him. My apologies.

Most any reputable furniture moving company should be able to do it. Call them and ask for references. There's a specific long piano dolly that makes it a breeze.

I know moving a grand piano sounds intimidating - but it isn't really very hard. As a teen I delivered/moved dozens of them for a local music store.

I just spoke with Bob, nice guy! He might be able to do the move for me if I can get the studio ready by the end of this month.

He said to say "hi" to Mike if I saw him, so MLC, Bob says "hi."
