interface "publishing" digital I/O to Digital Performer?

hi all, first time here...(this subsection, anyway!)
I've run up on a "concern" with my new Presonus FireStudio Project audio interface. I'm *way* outta my technical league here, so apologies in advance for the following lengthiness of detail?! Here goes....

My previous audio interface was a Digi(design) 002. It was an 8in/8out with SPDIF. Not unlike the FSP, or so I thought.
When I would connect the 002, and install it's Digi CoreAudioManager (CAM) software, it would "publish" (is that the right term?) to my Mac/DP, 8 channels of analogue audio and two channels of digital audio.
As a result, in DP, if I wanted to take, say 6 stereo audio tracks and mix them down to a single stereo mix, I would set the outputs of the 6 tracks to "Digital L/R" and the input of the target track to "Digital 1-2". Then, put the target track in rec. and hit "go". Everything traveled through the digital domain - no A/D or D/A conversions needed...
The result was a clean mix in the target track. BTW, none of the above required any hardware cabling (in or out of the 002's SPDIF ports) - it was all handled internally by software.

Yesterday, I tried to do the same thing with FireStudio Project. But the result was nothing getting to the target track. I tried all kinds of modifications in the Universal Control software, etc. but no joy. Finally phoned Presonus tech supt. and - after a 25 minute wait - got a tech guy who initially couldn't understand what I was talking about, then finished off by telling my that the FSP "just couldn't do that"..... ((though I'm not truly sure that he ever understood what I was asking about)).

So I'm turning that might have an FSP for an opinion? Was he correct that the FSP can't do this at all? It seems like it would be a pretty fundamental function of any quality audio interface.

And, if *some* interfaces can do this type of thing - and others can't - how in the world would we users know in advance?!

Again, apologies for the lengthiness, but all opinions/info will be greatly appreciated!
