iMac not recognizing 2nd Monitor (Thunderbolt/mini port)

Hello list...
On cold startup, why do I always need to unplug and replug thunderbolt mini display to vga adapter for imac to see second monitor ?
Once I do this, the 2nd monitor is recognized. If I restart, 2nd monitor is recognized.
thanks.. I am worried that the port will be compromised with all the unplug/replugs.
Btw... the "detect displays" function doesn't resolve this issue.
thanks for any help!

The iMac 2.8 i7 doesn't have Thunderbolt, does it?

Yep Mike it does.. Mid 2011 release iMac quad i7 21.5".
Only workaround I've found is to put it to sleep.
The Thunderbolt port doubles as a mini display port and has a vga adapter attatched to service the 2nd monitor.

Ahhhh... I was assuming the 27" - the last one of those with a 2.8G i7 was in 2009.

I don't understand why you are having this problem. You should search the Apple support boards to see if others are having this issue.

Have you asked Apple about this? A tech can get on the phone with you, look at your setup and run troubleshooting routines in real time.

If you are past the initial 90 day phone support, I recommend purchasing AppleCare giving you 3 years of phone support from your buy date. You can do this up to one year after your purchase.
