Trying to get some omph into my home recording, I have the MOTU2408 connected to a power mac g5 running logic, I went looking for a pre-amp. I’d learned through a recording studio video on youtube that pre-amps and DI boxes are essentials and as the MOTU has balanced inputs, I could see the logic. However, one merchant I went to said pre-amps are superfluous in my situation and could cause problems as there are already pre-amps included in my setup? I have looked at the MOTU website at both the interface and sound card specifications and it doesn’t state that either have onboard pre-amps. Could somebody tell me therefore, if the merchant is wrong, or the information is lacking.
Much appreciated

Merchant is confused. Get some preamps!
You can use free-standing mic pres running into the 2408's line ins. Use TRS to TRS or XLR to TRS (balanced) connections whenever possible.
You can also use one of the multi-channel mic pre amps that provide ADAT output if you need more than a few channels of preamplification.

Do you need esoteric stand-alone preamps for all 8 channels? For most of us, the answer is no but having one or two in your locker is nice.
A cost effective solution for some is something like a Mackie 1402vlz /pro/3. Each of its six preamps has a direct out through the inserts. Street price new is $399 for the vlz3. The vlz and vlzPro are widely available used. Mackie would have you believe that there is a much bigger difference between the preamps in the versions than anyone can hear in the field. The older vlz is a very nice preamp for most applications.
