Live Room G vs Guitar Rig vs Me :)

Hi all - I'm hoping to learn more about amp modeling, and how you all are using Live Room G. I'm historically a player transitioning into more of engineering side of things. Oh, and to get it out of the way since someone always asks: yes, I've searched through the forums and have done a ton of research already.
So... anyone who would like to help out I'd love to hear from you. If not, feel free to move along.
It's my understanding that when using Live Room G as a true amp simulator, it's best to record direct through a DI box at least, or HIz input on your AI, etc. And then build a DP signal chain that mirrors your real-world counterparts.
However I'm having a hell of a time getting what I would consider "real" sounds of of these steps, and I can't help but wonder if I'm missing something, or if my expectations are out of whack.
I've also done some experimenting in trying to build the "same" rig in DP 8 and Guitar Rig 5 (where there is sufficient overlap in amps, pedals, etc.) and while I certainly didn't expect the results to sound EXACTLY the same, I found I couldn't get them sounding anywhere even possibly remotely close to each other. But if they are both touting that each component sounds just like the real thing, etc. shouldn't they at least sound pretty close? Again, maybe it's just me.
So at the end of this post, my real question is kind of twofold: am I doing things the correct way, and perhaps I just still have a lot to learn in the details? Or perhaps am I out in left field here trying to get caught up on all the amp modeling.
I've been looking for some good training resources, but so far can't find anything overly specific on this topic, so any suggestions on perhaps where else I can dig would also be appreciated.
Thanks everyone!
