Is DP8 ready for paying clients?

I'm running DP7.24 on 10.8.2.
I'm in a situation where the system has to work everyday.
With this combo, it is working pretty well.

I tried DP8 for bit, but the bugs and conversions were a deal breaker.
I had a couple of bad experiences and went back to 7.24.

Is anybody out there having a stable and reliable system with DP8?
I'm talking about a studio where clients are coming in and expecting rock solid performance.
I know this is a very subjective question.
I want to go to 8, but I need your help.

Thanks

Staying with 7.24 as well mate. Pretty rock solid here. Waiting till I get a new Mac pro to switch to 8 so I have 2 machines running just can't afford downtime.

Why not have a separate system disk in your mac for running/testing DP8

That's what I do for my dreaded "Schmo" Tools HD system, you know ... the really pro package that, because a few plugins delay your audio it thinks it's "pro" to delay everything else so that all your overdubs are synced to delayed audio ie they are actually out of time! Sorry if I'm drifting off topic.

I'm waiting for the dust to settle with all this 64bit stuff ie till all the 3rd party people are up to speed.

Good luck

I think it depends on what you're doing. So far, given my work in audio recording, mixing, and MIDI arranging, orchestral mockups, etc., I do not hesitate to use it with a client. I can't speak for the film guys, but apparently there have been some problems which MOTU has pledged to fix in the next update. Some seem to have found a work-around, so maybe it's a non-issue for them as well.

I'm using all-64-bit plugins and VI's, though I do use jBridge for one item, a compressor by Slate. The companies that have not updated to 64 bit plugins and VI's have been dropped from my list of active software. I just don't care to deal with most of those companies, though there are a few that I'm going to rejoin when they get up to date. My feeling is that they've had many years to prepare for this. Their refusal to do so tells me how much they care about what I do, so I've dropped them. (mostly)

People who are using 32 bit DP8, and those who use a lot of plugins through jBridge, may experience less stability than those who just use the updated plugins. That's not a corroborated study, just speculation on my part. My instincts have kept DP pretty much trouble-free for over 25 years, and I have not had any crashes in the current version of DP.

I agree 90%

If it's a new project, I am starting it in DP 8. Period. It is rock solid and its one annoying issue for me is minor with an easy workaround.

My old projects don't always perform the way I want - it depends on the plugs that I used. It bothers me that my Izotope plugins don't retain their DP 7 settings when the project is opened in 8 so those projects will remain in 7 for now. It's a minor issue, really, and when those projects are done they will be put to bed.

OTOH, a couple older projects that opened in 5.13 and 7.01 never worked well in 7.12 and wouldn't open at all in 7.24... those open fine in 8.01 and substituting the non-working plugs has been ok (none had Izotope so far).

I have JBridge and haven't really explored it. There are a couple of 32bit plugs I will try and, if they don't work, I'll find others that do.

Except for very rare crashes (in a particular project, BTW) DP 8.01 has been very solid. I've done very long sessions with collaborators and clients as well as very, very long scoring sessions alone and would trust it a just as much as earlier versions - which is implicitly.

Caveat: I am not running any bridges or 32 bit plugs. If it ain't 64, it's out the door unless I need it, in which case I will boot in 32 or use DP7. So far, I have not needed anything 32 bit since installing DP8 or have updated what is available for update. I have both Plogue Bidule and Jbridge (preferring the former) but not using either.

Load up those VIs kids. The RAMs the limit!

I think 64 bit DP is ready, in OS 10.8.2, for client work, unless it's sync to picture (like Shoosh wrote above).

In my experience here, 32 bit DP 8.01 was not cutting it, especially in Snow Leopard. It proved to be unusable for me.

With clients sitting there, the most important thing is not for everything to work perfectly, but rather that there be no crashes. In over a month with 64 bit DP and 10.8.2, I have not had a single crash, even with very large templates.

I can speak for this film guy. The problem is .dv files not being read. If you HAVE TO have .dv files to send over FW (which DP 8 can't do anyway, yet) then use QT Pro or some other app to convert them to a /mov file and you're good to go. I know this works as I've scored about 4 or 5 movie projects since moving to DP 8.01 in 64 bit, and for clients who not only pay, but demand a very precise level of product both technically and artistically.

Why they use me is still, however, a mystery to all. LOL!
