click on DP preferences causes crash

running tiger and DP6 (no laughing, please). Unusually stable system for years, not wanting to rock the boat.

However, yesterday began a strange quirk. I'd click on DP preferences menu item (or option click on the metronome symbol in the counter, which also invokes the preferences window) and ... crash.

It happens even in a new file.

Of course, I have tried trashing my preferences and repairing permissions, but to no avail. Anyone heard of this irritant?

I'm on a G5 dual 1.8 with 3G RAM

Have you tried uninstalling DP and reinstalling?
That's helped me many times when DP became unstable.
Others will also mention what I'm about to mention,in plain and simple termed DP6 was probably the worst version of DP in years,I'll recommend you think about a DP7 upgrade if you can still get it from MOTU.
DP7.24 was infinitely better than DP6,IMO so was DP5
fwiw I have had DP since DP3,I still have DP6 still in the box it shipped in unopened, there were so many reports from users about how bad 6 was I went from DP5 directly to DP7.
If you want to stay in 6 I'd try reinstalling DP6 and see if that helps.
Good luck!

reinstall is definitely the next step.

Any specific files you recommend being deleted from libraries, etc. before reinstalling? (I'll delete preferences of course)

Strangely, DP6 has been absolutely solid for me for years, although I'm very familiar with it's bad reputation.

I'll move to DP8 after Apple has a viable new computer to do it with. (an appropriate mac mini or a new mac pro)

I don't mean to take advantage of an open shot, but really, DP6? C'mon and get with the program, man. Even though DP6 got better with Snow Leopard as an OS (it was like getting an automatic upgrade), it's still not the best version out there. DP 7 was a fantastic version, and DP8 is pretty much the same for me. Better, actually, but performance wise I haven't noticed a lot of difference.

Some folks are still using Tiger and DP5. That's ok, too. (DP5 WAS a great version, btw) But honestly, what's stopping you from upgrading? You can run it in 32 bits, if you're not ready for 64 yet. The upgrade to 64 bits is a MAJOR undertaking, btw, because everything has got to be upgraded. But you can still run DP8 at 32 bits and get more out of it than DP6.

Sorry… I know you asked us not to hound you about it, but I can't help it. When I see someone using DP6, I know they need encouragement to move on. That was the worst version of DP ever to be released. In DP 7 or 8, you can even utilize themes to change the look of DP. That's gotta be worth something over the stark interface of DP6.

Most versions have an uninstall function on the DP install disc,it's been a while but last time I did this(DP7) it was quick easy and solved the issues.

Shoosh,
Can DP8 run on a G5 PPC Mac?
I don't think so but I might be mistaken,that's why I suggested either 7 or 5.

Sounds like a corrupt plist. Quir DP. Delete all the Digital Performer plists you can find. Restart DP.

You're right. No DP8 on a PPC Mac. I'm not even sure about DP7. Sorry, I didn't notice the PPC computer. My bad.

DP7 is not approved but if you go past the warning from the installer you can run DP7 on a PPC G5 ,many G5 users did this successfully.

Being of the "if it ain't broke" mindset, I have been reluctant to rock the boat of such a notably stable system. I've been using it everyday for years with very few problems. It is a dedicated DP computer (I do all internet stuff [like this forum] on other macs).

My plan has been to leapfrog to DP8, but that requires all new PCI/thunderbolt interface considerations, upgrading plug-ins, Peak, etc. It's coming soon, if Apple will cooperate. In the meantime, I totally hear you with regard to v7. I do get that. If history repeats itself, though, I will probably fix this bug and bounce on my way with v6 until the big leap to v8. If there's more problems, I will move to v7.

Being the only guy in town having good luck with DP6 has been a bit of a joke. For whatever it's worth, I've been lucky in love too.

Really? I've had DP 7.24 with OS 10.5.8 on my G5 as long as it has been out and never saw anything that said it wasn't compatible when I installed V7.00 or any of the updates. Is this getting confused with SL on a G5?

... and I know a lot of people didn't like V6, but I never had any big problems with it. At the very worst, a reinstall ought to get the OPs system back to where it was.

I seem to remember there was a message when installing that users had to ignore and proceed and DP7 installed properly.
It's possible maybe I'm confusing this with something else..... :-(
