Will DP ever support musicXML?

Post by rosindabow »

Hi all, will DP ever support musicXML? I have been using Finale a bit more and would love the ability to export my DP files as musicXML - any chance that DP might implement that?

Have you tried exporting your DP file as a standard MIDI file, and importing that into Finale? You won't have dynamic markings and the like, but it's a place to start.

Yes I have. It is very limited in the translation. Just the notes - nothing else. MusicXML would be such a wonderful and quick way to move the music. Both Pro Tools Logic have more sophisticated built-in notation. DP used to have Mosaic but that was quite some time ago. We need a little help in this department.

There are old Mosaic users who are still wondering if MOTU will ever upgrade it. Probably not but they live in hope.

I think it would be great if MOTU let someone have at the source code, revive Mosaic, then MOTU could port it back to DP - this would solve so many issues. Unfortunately, with the music notation market in trouble (Sibelius, SmartScore, GVox and how many others?), I can't see this happening ever.

Till then, notation will continue to be the orphaned step-child of DP. MOTU apparently doesn't see it as a wise business decision to commit any resources to it.

There was a pleasant surprise waiting for me when I went to order Sibelius a few months ago. It turns out that they consider MOTU's Mosaic worthy of a crossgrade price. I forget what it cost, but it was more like the upgrade fee than the retail cost. If you want good engraving/scoring software, Sibelius can be had very reasonably.

I see that Logic Pro X now has XML export, but does anybody know if MOTU have plans to include it in DP? I'd certainly find it very handy for moving scores across to Finale.

BTW, a forum member (if he's still active) who I worked with (and played in a tribute band with) years ago, worked for a MusicXML vendor at least for several years if not currently. So the expertise may be on-board if MOTU wants an initial consultation on the subject. Magic Dave or someone else can send me email and I'll tell them who it is.
