Using the voc comp tool in DP 8, my file has become terribly slow. EACH swipe of the comp tool takes a good 3+ sec to generate into the comp track. Sometimes, it take 5 sec depending on length of phrase. While on paper that looks like a small #, it is not. DP has really gotten slower.
I have tried compacting the file; getting rid of unused soundbites; merging all audio to avoid fragging; “save copy as” (with audio being copied) as clean audio to new part of drive; save as to an SSD drive, (I really though that would speed things up); removing all old VIs in file, computer maintenance and re-starts;running with only DP plug in safe mode/trashing prefs and rebuilding, DP 8.0 instead of 8.01/etc.
Nothing speeds this #&^%$#%^&* up....lol
I have about 26 stereo audio tracks and 16 mono tracks. Then I am comping about 20 tracks of mono lead vocals. So, if you add those, you get 26 stereo/36 mono.
I the fast computer I have, this shouldn’t lug like this.
And if it was a drive issue, the SSD drive would have handled things.
Any ideas would be appreciated also, anyone else noticing comping in DP 8 to be slow?
I will have to see over the long haul if it is just this file or not? I have no other files with 20 takes of vocals to comp right now.
I will add one “aside” here-The fastest Macs today are still limited by a 3 gig buffer transfer speed when it comes to dealing with SSD drives. the fastest SSD drives are 6. I spoke with a tech guy who said the ssd drive “industry” is ahead of Quad Core Macs right now and that it was really dumb for apple to stay at 3 gig transfer rates. It is expected that the newer Mac Pros will move to 6.
I don’t know if this could be my issue or not. I was very surprised to see no increase in render time in comping when moving to the ssd.
PS.
(I may have the #s wrong on transfer speed. Maybe it is 6 with ssds capable of 12? All I recall for sure is that the capabilities of the fast ssd drive are twice that which any Mac Pro allows and that, short of some sort of custom rebuild, there is NOTHING one can do about this.)

Re: DP 8, voc comping terribly slow
No idea what to tell you, but does it run faster if you've only got, say, 8 or 10 takes to comp? I have never comped 20 takes. I have no idea if mine slows down for that or not. I'm not doing a project in which I can comp takes, so I can't test it right now, but last time I comped takes (which I LOVE to do!) there was no discernible lag.
Find out if it's just that file, or if it's just when you get past 15 or 20 takes, then report what you've found to MOTU. You know the drill. It's good that you're out there on the front lines, Dave. Just be sure that the right people are always getting your reports.

I have found voc comping to be problematic though. A file will be working fine and poof, will get sluggish. Also, edge editing a boundaries of a selected sub take has always been prone to cause a crash on my system.
It’s like it works fine and then something under the hood corrupts.
I should see if MOTU can upload a huge file and test on their system.
