8.01 for me, has had problems.
At a minimum, it no longer copies and pastes plug in data. And it is pretty likely that it ruined the ability for drum loops inside of VE Pro to sync up when buffers in VE are above “none”.

I trashed what I thought was all of DP 8 and 8.01 and re-installed, but I am crashing a lot and wasn’t before. Before messing with 8.01, (meaning before trying to replace it with 8.0), I was stable. Now it is Hard to work or mix, crash crash crash. etc. I want the “good ol’ days” of DP 8.0, nice and stable.
I just want to go back to 8.0
I need to know where ALL of the hidden little files are to chuck all remnants of DP 8.0 and 8.01.
i will then attempt another new install of 8.0
I have heard some say just throw away the APP, Not so!
For ex. after trashing what I thought was ALL of DP 8.0, and then reinstalling tonight, DP 8 didn’t ask me for my serial #. So obviously something was left over from 8.0.
There are under the hood files. So, i;d love anyones advise on where those are so I can thoroughly clean out DP 8 and start agin.

You know, if I had as much trouble with a DAW as you do with DP, Mr. Hip, I'd give up. No ••••, I would have taken an axe to the whole damn rig by now... Or, moved on to a DAW that didn't drive me nuts.

Here's a constructive answer, and I'm not kidding:

Scrub your drive and start over. If I had this constant parade of oddball non-reproducible screw ups, I'd go clean. Because at this pont, you are (and I'm not saying this to be snarky) only guessing that the problem lies in the DP 8.01 install. The conflict could easily be between two little pieces of code that don't lie in any of DP's files.

I actually did this after a massive train wreck when first upgrading to Lion, and have not had a major problem since (by which I mean nothing I didn't quickly figure out and fix)... Not when upgrading OSX or DP, not when installing and running Logic. I recommend it. Yeah, it's a PITA, but it beats wrangling over weirdo inconsistencies every day.

Doesn't matter where the file is. DP 8 will let you authorize as many times as you want. It phones home and cancels all but the last two authorizations. It's in the documentation.

I cleaned out some of the personal exchange in this topic. It does seem to be very similar to another topic started on the board... essentially the same complaint. Anyway, the main thing I noticed is this topic really belongs in the "Troubleshooting" forum, so I'm moving it there. Thanks.

And as to re-builind my whole hard drive, i have had a wonderful experience with DP 8 until 8.01 so I am not sure I am in the position of "parade of problems". But if I see a parade, I will consider rebuilding. I wonder if I should go to Lion while I am at it?

Even though I'm still in Snow Leopard,I think most people will recommend skipping Lion and go straght to Mountain Lion, that's what I anticipate doing at some point.

Exactly what I just did. Straight to ML and loving it. Still kept a SL partition since I don't really want to buy something to replace GoLive and some of my video extraction programs that went south. I stay booted in 64 and launch DP in 64. Plogue Bidule will suffice to pull older VIs over. I don't use many audio processing plugs and the ones I do use are 64-bit compliant.

Screams right along with DP 8.01 and I'm eagerly anticipating the next release as well as the PC version. Good times.

Any authorization issues when going to mountain Lion?
I have over 1/2 my 1 terabyte sys drive available.
Can you install ML without reformatting the whole drive?
If so, can you go back to the old partition should ML prove problematic?

The video on creating a partition in disc utility is straightforward (and I've done that with other discs), but I'm still confused or at least suspicious of the following:

Say I want to create a second partition on my iMacs' main hard drive (2T)- can I safely do so without harming or erasing any data on my main drive??

OLB makes a good point about the auth file.

Just for the record, if you Option-Click on the app icon, choose "Show Package Contents". I'm still in 10.6.8, so that terminology might have changed in 10.7/10.8.

Anyway, you can do an effective manual uninstall by deleting the Package Contents. Further, search for anything that includes "DP", "Digital Performer", or "MOTU", and you'll pretty much have it covered if a complete drive wipe is not an option.

That said, nothing surpasses the fresh start of a total do-over.

AFAIK, partitioning a drive means losing the contents of that drive. Back up (clone) the data first, then partition. At that point, you can copy back the data.

To that extent, I wouldn't recommend partitioning the system drive. It's always busy with Virtual Memory. I would sooner recommend getting some sort of external drive to not tax VM's performance.

I'm currently retooling my entire system to finally make use of two 2TB and two 1TB internal drives as well as another 1TB and 750GB external, retiring a 500GB internal that was running my "test" ML system to an EZ dock.

In the process, I've cloned my ML boot drive ...several times... in the last two days. Every time I checked for authorizations and DP wanted to be reauthorized each time via the internet. Enter the keycode, it phones home and you're off.

[How do you spell PIRATES BEWARE! ☺ I like that ...a lot.]

Also MS Word 2011 wants to be reauthorized. Adobe just wants to confirm the move and assign scratch tracks to the new location. MachFive (the only VI I tested) couldn't find some samples, but once I loaded the instrument from the new location it was fine. All DP projects opened fine.

The fly in the ointment was FW! My former TimeMachine backup and reserve drive (to bring to locations, etc) were in CalDigit enclosures via the FW 800 ports. CCC would not complete any clones to the drives. The problem was ML, which apparently doesn't play well with fire(wire).

The sad result is the drives had to be cloned via USB 2.0 and took hours; about 12 hours total - ugh! (I'll be adding a USB 3.0 card as soon as they are back in stock at Melrose Mac.)

The new configuration is as follows (all as separate partitions for easy restore via Disk Utility or CCC):

1TB drive A:

• 333 GB partition for ML boot TIme Machine backed up
• 225 GB partition for SL boot*
• 441 GB for VI libraries*

1TB drive B:

• 750 GB DP/Finale projects TIme Machine backed up
• 250 GB SFX library*

2TB drives A & B:

Dedicated to Time Machine for a total of 4TB of (essentially redundant) project backups no more than an hour or two apart (at most) from the current project even if one of the Time Machine drives AND the live project disks crap out. The system should be eminently recoverable, or as well as any on sight disk array can be in a small project studio.

The * drives are not included in TimeMachine backups as they are cloned to the 1TB external drive. As VIs and SFX are added, CCC will clone those to add the new data.

In regard to partitioning, Frodo is correct, partitioning will wipe the drive, but you can also resize a partition making it smaller without damaging the data. Disk utility will indicate visually how much data is on on the disk and how much free space you can shrink it down from. Problem is (for me at any rate) it's not always possible to recapture the space to another partition. All resizing seems to do is make the disk smaller. That doesn't make much sense at all - especially if you can't use that freed up space in another partition.

IOW, if the upper partition appears as 500GB and the lower one is also 500GB, and you adjust the lower partition to 250GB, that 250GB you theoretically "freed up" cannot necessarily be added to the upper partition. That is assuming a 2 partition scheme, obviously, but I've done a few of these in tests the last few days and have not found a way to reclaim the "abandoned" drive space to any of the other partitions. And if you try to make the old 2 partition drive three partitions, you will have to wipe the existing partitions to do so. All data is lost.

Maybe I'm missing something, but my M.O. is to create partitions that will work in the first place when I set up the system, then clone, restore or just "drag copy" data in the Finder to the partition in the event of a catastrophe.

Thanks Frodo! That's what I always thought as well, although I thought I read somewhere lately that you could do it without losing data. Certainly wouldn't try it without being sure!!

I do have a separate 60g bootable partition on a FW drive (partitioned it before using it), but haven't had a chance to build upon it or install ML etc. Confusion there about how much data is needed on that drive to run DP, would I need to install all my plugs there as well, seems like a huge undertaking.

I'd love to start futzing with DP8 but 7.24 is working so well at the moment I hate to mess it up, in spite of most reports being so positive about DP8. I am confident that curiosity will probably maim the cat by the end of another month though...... one more update and I'm in.

Only for DP 7. You need to upgrade to 7.24 first. Unless you are doing a straight OS upgrade instead of reinstall, then 7.x will not ask to reauthorize.

DP 8 uses a different authorization scheme. It phones home and MOTU cancels all authorizations except the last two.

It helps if you show the User Library (hidden in OS 10.7/8) and hidden files first. You need to open Terminal and use the following commands. Best to copy and paste as they are case sensitive and the spaces are critical.

Show/Hide user Library: I and many others never hide the User Library once this is run.

chflags nohidden ~/Library

chflags hidden ~/Library


Show/Hide hidden files:

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE

killall Finder

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE

killall Finder

Re-launch Finder: Run this after running either of the above, otherwise you have to re-boot. It does not affect anything open or running unlike force-quitting the Finder.

killall Finder


Hidden folders will be greyed but visible. To see their contents, right-click and release on Quick Look
