VI routing question

Hi. after a long break from DP, i can't seem to route my Symphonic instrument right to PLAY it within DP (audition it). Instrument track+ MIDI track routed to it. input from any of my MIDI controler on the right MIDI channel of a loaded preset, record enabled.
NO SOUND
when i record the MIDI track, it records MIDI notes, and then when played back, SOUND comes out of MSI.
I've looked again in the manual but stuck. may be just brain fried.
I though it was a new DP8 setting, but i went back to DP6 and it was the same. never had this issue before.
