DP 8 Latency??

Just got DP 8 , seems very latent compared to previous 7.24 and earlier?? I'm using split screens (Apple) I noticed if I minimize the left side of DP (tracks, transport, etc) the mixer then becomes crisp and normal > ? It's like my vid card can't keep up ?

Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core Intel Xeon
16 GB DDR3 Ram
OS 10.7.5
DP 8
Waves 9.0 (not many FX used as of now)

buffer size 1024

:banghead:

any clues how to optimize?
thanks

Maybe if you suspect the video card you should include that in the specs?

Is it a Mac Pro 1,1?

ok so I put all of DP 8 on one screen and it's totally fine , move a mixer or even one insert effect to the 2nd screen and all the movement gets noticeably slower- is my vid card unable to handle DP on (2) cinema displays = sluggish

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB

thanks

I've always had occasional odd issues with DP7 running multiple screens (I have 4 here).

I hoped they would be fixed in v8 - lets hope for a far smoother product come the first update.

Really? I just now saw this. I've been using two displays forever. So you can actually lower latency settings by putting every DP window on one display? Or are you saying DP was more snappy?

That's very odd. It doesn't seem like there's that much going on that your video card would have trouble with. So what are you doing now, using one monitor?

Yes , If I consolidate everything to one display DP moves perfectly fine. Move the mixer over to the right display , everything slows down on both screens . Going to try a new vid card on Friday . No idea why its doing this and Motu tech support said they have no idea either !

Wow. I would say I'm shocked but I'm not. If you think about it 512MB isn't very much these days with hungry 64-bit apps, that do use quite a bit of display resource, and .. does anyone know if DP uses the GPU? Can't remember if DP was written to take advantage of Quartz GL, if only for movies - I have no idea.

This is from Wiki... "As of Mac OS X v10.5 Quartz 2D Extreme has been renamed to QuartzGL - however it still remains disabled by default, as there are some situations where it can degrade performance, or experience visual glitches; it is a per-application setting which can be turned on if the developer wishes."

Maybe you could ask MOTU about this..?

Getting a fastest graphics card with the most memory, within reason, (we're not playing video games here), may make sense.

But I'm just totally guessing. Anyway, I've thought about a new graphics card to extend the life of my 2008 MacPro if there is one that will feasibly do that.

Would like to know what happens in your case if you don't mind.

Actually today I've pushed DP8 hard. Got it up to using 6GBs of RAM. No crashes. But it is sluggish and really starts to fall behind on commands as the CPU tries to keep up with buffered commands.

I wonder if Shooshie is having that problem with his keyboard issue. I mean, I wonder is they're related? Shoosh, if you're reading this, do you use two displays?

I'm seeing the same thing as you. Actually starts off fine but then the wiper starts getting behind and after awhile everything on the screen is slow. Audio seems to play fine. I've found that if I quit DP and restart it then everything is fine and I go through the whole process again.
I originally thought that the amount of tracks might influence this as my first projects on 8 were 80 tracks, but yesterday I had a project with two guitar tracks and a vocal and after a few minutes the wiper was behine. Have two monitors, my video card is screaming fast, bought it to use Adobe CS6. It also speeds up my old version of Final Cut Pro.
I tried the move everything onto one monitor and it did make a difference.
So far it hasn't been a deal breaker so I'm going to keep running 8 and see what else I notice.

After taking in all the info as of late, I have a feeling this new vid card Radeon 5770 1GB won't make any difference. After I pop it in I'll chime back in and let you guys know. I'm hearing that the fan in the Radeon could be noisy trouble as well , not good for tracking !

Using (2) monitors on 2 separate vid cards is another trial.

I have a feeling this is a DP issue , although the MOTU tech support guy told me he had 10 screens going with 0 latency! I think I'm just anal latency guy

DP starts falling behind to the point that it takes almost 30 - 60 seconds for it to react in most of my situations. I would think that this is something MOTU will know about and fix. I haven't tried moving all of my windows to one screen but will do so just to make sure that I'm having the same problem. But yesterday I had to wait, and listen to an entire 5 minute song until DP would finally catch up and respond to my commands.

And it's obvious to me that the more that's going on (automation, etc..) the more backlogged DP gets. Because near the end of the song when DP was doing less it started catching up to commands.

Let us know how the new video card goes. Yeah, the fan could be a bad deal.

I don't use two displays, but I use multiple "Spaces" as virtual displays. In that sense, I'm usually running the equivalent of 5 displays at once.

I HAVE noticed that if I've been working in one display without trouble, and if I then spread windows out into the other virtual displays, or Spaces, then I'll start getting the problems. I'm going to experiment today with running no other Spaces.

Shoosh

Ah, OS X's Spaces. It's the Finder on steroids.

Open Mission Control (the app in your dock), and mini windows will appear. A lot of audio, video and photoshop guys use it to place different windows onto different "spaces". It's like having multiple desktops. You can have as many as you want basically. You can place your mixer in one space, your sequencer in another, then your tracks in another , etc... and then switch between them with keystrokes. Also, a very cool thing is they're assignable and they work with gestures. I bought a magic trackpad and a magic mouse and I'm a swiping, gesturing, spaces fool (swish, swash, swish...)

Once you get used to it, you won't go back. It's great for guys that only want to use one very expensive Apple 27" monitor, but there are lot's of good uses for it. If you have a lot of RAM you can go nuts with it.

Open Mission Control, or check this out...

got it , I kinda do that with 2 monitors , If I didn't have the latency all would be well with the world! Thanks!
