File compatibility between DP8 and DP7?

Post by beautypill »

Do you need to worry about backwards compatibility now? Or is everything Kosher on this front?

Lemmeknow.

Thanks!

Other than the themes issue (older 7.24 themes and Andy's GUI mods, which
do not work at all in DP8), I've found no compatibility problems going between
7.24 and 8 - so far. In fact, you can create a project in DP8, save it, and
then open it in 7.24.

And, as others have pointed out, after you first launch DP8, close and quit,
and then launch 7.24, all of DP8's new plug-ins show up in 7.24. This is
awesome for those of us who wanted the new plugs more than anything else,
and who want to continue in 7.24 for the time being.

7.24 and 8 and co-exist happily on your computer and you can go back and forth between them without any trouble.

Well that is sweet. At least till some of my 32bit plugs become 64bit.

Unless... you're running in 64 and 32 bit mode, respectively, in which case your 32 plugs will not appear in DP8.

Oh... this is the first time I've heard this. I had just finished stating that I would probably avoid this upgrade for a couple of months, but this little nugget of information has me thinking twice again. I would love to play with some of the new plugins.

I am impressed that MOTU set things up so that you could go back to DP 7.24 and still utilize the new plugins. That is pretty smart planning! I also like that we don't have to worry about saving DP8 files in a special way in order to open them back up in DP7. Again, that is really cool, since there are obviously going to be some growing pains here. It's nice to know that we can keep going strong in the stability of DP7 if we need to.

Not quite enough information but I'll take a whack at it. If you a straight copy of a project from one computer to another, you will have problems. This includes uploading it to Dropbox or copying the file over the network.

You need to zip it first. Zip your project on the PC, then copy it over to the Mac. Unzip it and open in DP 8, save and it should now open in DP 7. It may open in 7.24 without opening in 8 first but that is not a given. BTW, you can install DP 8 on two machines that you own but the DP 8 license manager phones home and will only allow you to run it on one at a time. Make certain that, when you authorize another machine, you enter your name, license code and email address exactly the way you have it registered with MOTU - spelling counts.

This is not just PC to Mac. I is also what you do with Mac to Mac or PC to PC. DP is sensitive to file ownership and permissions. Also, this preserves the headers - straight copying does not. There are many threads on this issue.

If you are leaving the project on an external drive and swapping that, do Get Info on the drive from the Mac OS and check Ignore Drive Ownership and Apply to enclosed files.

If the preject is small enough to email, that also works.

Yeah, the updates are such that there are no new changes to the file structure. New commands are added to manipulate your data, but they are the same kinds of data read by DP7. So it's completely fine to open a DP7 project in DP8. Unfortunately, some of the features I'd like to see in the future would require some project data overhauls, though.

ok so what your saying is that to open a dp8 file that was saved on a windows machine , i must first open the file in dp8 on a mac and save it before i can open it in dp7? this sucks cuz im working on a project for school and they only have macs with dp7 and my home setup is windows based dp8 so i cant install the dp8 demo onthe macs at school....
