Hi all,

I love working with DP7, but there's one thing that drives me crazy... but there has to be a way around it - at least I hope so.

I'm working on a track, not setting up a mx, but just flipping between the tracks window and the mixer - tweaking levels and plug-ins as I build the track. So I spend however long setting up the channels in the mixer. Then I find that I need to go back to the tracks window to do something - and when I go back to the mixer..... aarrrgh!! All my channel setup is gone. Just one completely irrelevant channel sitting there looking at me. God I hate that!

Could some kind soul out there pleeease explain why I lose my channel setup, and what I can do about it?

I feel your pain! That used to annoy me too... That happens when you select a track and go back to the mixer. The mixer shows only the selected track(s).
I don't have any workarounds because I got used to it and when I select a track I then deselect it before heading back to the mixer. That way the tracks stay where they are.
Maybe the fine folks here have a solution. Me... it was just getting used to it.

Thanks for your quick reply. It seems such an unnecessary source of frustration. In an age when we have rovers hooning around taking 3D pics on Mars, how hard can it be to get DP to remember the last mixer setup? Maybe I'm going off prematurely. I'll just cross all fingers and toes in the hope that there is a sneaky solution to the prob.

I was dealing with the same thing, then found out that you can save the mixer layout (actually you can save multiple layouts) to avoid this issue - have a look at p754 for details.

You can also open the track selector in a sidebar window if you like to pick and choose what to display dynamically.

I've had a look through page 754, and while it certainly goes some of the way to addressing the issue, it raises the question 'do I want to have to save every little temporary channel layout that I may never need to use again?' For example, today I gradually set up quite a complicated mixer setup - it kind of evolved while I was working. But strangely, I must have found myself flipping between the tracks window and the mixer for most of the morning, and the mixer remained exactly as I had left it each time I toggled backward and forward. It was obviously remembering the layout each time without me having to save the layout as some specific name. Then all of a sudden, out of the blue, for no apparent reason it flipped it's wig. It reverted to reveal just one irrelevant fader in the mixer, and I had to start again. And that Is frustrating. If we could just figure out what circumstances conspired to hold that channel setup in limbo for so long, I would be one happy Aussie producer! Any and all ideas graciously accepted.

This is a big beef of mine as well. It happens in two instances...

1. In the Consolidated Window: Switching to the Mixing Board from an edit window with an active selection.

2. Outside the Consolidated Window (Mixing Board as a stand alone window): Closing the Mixing Board, then reopening it while in an edit window with an active selection.

The only way to avoid it is to keep the mixer open as a stand-alone window outside of the Consolidated Window, and never close it. You should also de-select the Mixing Board from the list of windows in DP's Consolidated Windows preferences. I've suggested to MOTU to give us the option of having the Mixing Board respond or not respond to edit window selections.

This is one of the main reasons I use Spaces. My mixer is always open full-screen on Space 2, or in Lion, Desktop 2. With it set to full screen, all the time, there is no need to change anything. I just flip to Space 2 and I'm looking at the Mixing Board, exactly as I left it.

I would so love to use Spaces, but it's too big of a processor and memory hit on my current lowly machine. I had a big ole love affair with it, and the breakup was painful.

this has also been a pet peeve of mine and was always hesitant to ask about it.

Hmm. I've never had this issue, and I can't seem to duplicate it. (I don't use consolidated windows, however.) Could it be a setting somewhere? Even trying Amplidood's #2 works fine on my system. Or perhaps it's because I have consolidated windows off?

You can duplicate the issue this way-

1 Set up some tracks on the Mixing Board
2 Close the Mixing Board
3 Make a selection of different tracks (or one) from the Overview or Seq Editor
4 Activate the Mixer however you do it

It should now reflect the tracks you had selected from the edit windows and not the original set.

It's a bit of a non-issue for non-CW users because most never close the Mixing Board window. For CW users, DP technically thinks the Mixer window has closed once you switch to a different window. The problem is the Mixer cannot be closed or it will reflect whatever new selection you make in an edit window when re-opened.

As I recall, there's a setting in the Preferences to address this.

I don't remember the exact words, but it's something like: Open Editors based on Selection.

I never close the mixer, so I don't have this issue, but pressing Command-D before going to the mixer can help, so any prior selection is reset to nothing.

Command D? I just know I'm look a complete turkey for asking, but what does that do?
