New Mac Pros from Apple...

Post by FutureLegends »

... but what a lazy update it was!
Same enclosure, No Thunderbolt, No 1600MHz memory, No faster SATA, Same graphic cards... pretty much just new processors if I'm not mistaken. 6 core machines are a little cheaper now though and there's no 8-core options, only 4, 6 or 12.

The new MacBook Pro with retina display looks killer though...

Yes, a very lame "update". Not their focus anymore. At least they didn't kill it (for now). I have a 6 core and it screams. Much cheaper option now. Anyone wanting a Mac Pro, I'd say get the 6 core if you can swing it.

The questions now:
When cometh DP8 and PC compatibility? and
How well will DP and my plugins work under Windows?

The price drop does make the "new" Mac a little more appealing...

Pretty disappointing for sure.
That the RAM is slower than what's in the new Macbook Pros is stupid.

Yeah, looks like they just crammed the new processors in there and called it a day...

Even if they undoubtedly are great machines, paying that amount of money for something that is mainly yesteryears technology just doesn't feel right.

From the same article: "Our own sources insist that a more serious update is being worked on, but it seems Apple has left the Mac Pro to languish until that new version is ready."
Maybe some hope and even more waiting is in order...

I'm in serious need of a new computer and was ready to sell an arm and a leg to get one if the Mac Pro got a serious update... but not for that.

yeah,it feels like an interim refresh.
I expect the next "real" MacPro update will be more of what most of us would expect ...Thunderbolt,USB3 etc.....

You have to wonder why they bothered. Maybe they were having trouble getting parts for the old configurations?

It's been a really long day, so my level of reasoning and concentration is pretty far down, but this still popped into my head...(what's left of it!) :banghead:

I wonder if the minimal "upgrades" and the dismissal of incorporating the new technologies, as mentioned above, and (probably) resulting slow sales will just give Apple a "legitimate" reason to discontinue Mac Pro production.

Hope not...such an elegant machine.

It's not really like Apple is it? When they decide a product is not part of the strategy, they just dump it, no ceremony, excuses or apologies. And the pro line is not appearing anywhere near to the top of the priority list.

The question now is, will apple wait for Ivy Bridge late in 2013 to update the Pro, or are they planning a Sandy Bridge update in the nearer future. One reason Apple did what it did today is the processors used in the 2010 Pro are no longer being manufactured by Intel.

It is very possible we will see a Sandy Bridge Mac Pro with Thunderbolt and USB3 sooner rather than later.

The current low-end 12-core might not be a bad deal for DP work, which is highly multi-threaded. I estimate it will Geekbench at about 18,000. The six core (Geekbenching just over 14,000) looks more affordable now, too, but the 12-core has twice the RAM capacity and will allow a significant processor update should even more power be desired in the future.

Don't hold your breath for that.

Bottom line:

If you're still going along on a G4 or G5, the 2010 Mac Pros should go down a bit - some will hit the refurb store and used prices will also decline a little. Perhaps now is your time to buy.

If your 1-5 year old Mac Pro is showing its age because your AV use is that intense - but you can still hang on - you are going to wait.

Those like I who went the iMac or MacMini route to save money - and have not yet hit the limits of our systems... We're on the sidelines for now (in my case till after my daughter graduates college).
