MIDI Playback Randomly Stops During Playback

Post by richardein »

Does anyone else have this problem? I'll be writing a sequence in MIDI and want to play it back. Sometimes, all the tracks will play back. Sometimes one track will start playing back and then stop. If I pick a different start point, it sometimes play back properly, sometimes not. It's not an interface problem because when the track stops playing back, the MIDI meter does not light up. In other words, the problem seems to be within DP itself.

What is going on? How can it be fixed?

Doesn't that tell you that it IS an interface problem? DP is not getting MIDI. If it was a DP problem, the lights would keep blinking but DP would not play the MIDI.

I'd start with something like MIDI Pipe to get a display of the MIDI data the Mac receives. If MIDI is interrupted, I'd try different cables next.

Thanks for your reply.

It's not an interface problem because I'm not using an interface; everything's inside one computer. I'm going from a MIDI track directly into plogue bidule. The MIDI meter inside Digital performer does not light up and therefore no MIDI data reaches bidule - and therefore no sound.

However, if I start playback from a slightly different position, I sometimes, not always, get MIDI playback working properly. This happens on individual tracks. Other tracks play perfectly. It seems to be related to starting playback on a particular bar.

Thanks for any insight you can give me.

Adding...

Perhaps it was unclear, but it is pre-recorded MIDI data that is not playing back reliably. It has nothing to do with recording MIDI data, just playing it back.

I'd check Event Chasing for those tracks.

I tried turning on all event chasing, turning off all event chasing. It did not help. Playback is still not reliable. However, selecting the tracks I want to hear and pressing option-spacebar does play all the tracks properly.

I would appreciate any other suggestions you, or anyone else, might have.
