Stubborn Mail red tag won't go away...

Hello, everyone.
Mail (in Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro) keeps displaying one red tag, as if there were a new unread message. I know there are't any, but I can't get rid of the stupid tag. I have lots of mailboxes, so I actually created a smart mailbox set to show any unread messages including the trash, just to make sure, and it didn't show any.
I tried deleting its .plist file. It did solve the problem, but then all my mailboxes, smart mailboxes and accounts get reset to default, and I really don't feel like setting all that again. Once I put back the original .plist file, it still shows the annoying red tag.
I mean, it's not the end of the world or anything, but I want it to go back to normal.
Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this that does not involve deleting the .plist?
Thanks!
