I also did a stint with logic but finally sold it as DP7 came out as I felt that the few advantages it held over DP then where obliterated And DPs gone from strength to strength since.

I trust you checked with MOTU, I'm sure you'll get the DP8 for free if you ordered DP7 now?

As for elastic time, DP has had time stretch since forever (believe it was the first DAW to offer it). But I agree, when it comes to ease of use they've been outdone by the competition now and could use an upgrade in that department...

Cool same boat different oars! On a whim I switched from DP2 to Logic 4, years ago, and back to DP fully at 7. I still own Logic as I'm a data miner of old material at times and Logic 8 isn't worth anything these days. Yes I agree the time stretching in DP is old but I'm certain DP9 at least will cover that, and Live is the king of that anyway. The pitch correction in DP is pretty dammed good though. DP7 is miles above the earlier versions IMO, just so much better with contextual menus alone!

Plogue Bidule, VE Pro, Interapplication MIDI, and other means. For example, Wallander Instruments' WIVI can run over 100 instruments without much of a RAM draw, and the majority of them are fantastic. Kontakt also runs an external server, as does Vienna. Each developer has found their own way of getting around the 4GB limit, but when DP 8 comes out there will be no more need for that, generally speaking.

Welcome back, and I hope you find DP more to your liking, now. The great thing is that you'll have experience in both, and you can join our multi-platform guys in fielding questions that require knowledge of both, should you care to get involved.

@DZ: Yes I checked with MOTU before ordering DP7. I am eligible for a free upgrade to DP8 when it comes out, which is brilliant. It’s what made me decide to buy the DP7 upgrade now, rather than wait for 8.

Well, if elastic time is the only thing I miss, then I’ll be doing pretty well. It was about 4 years ago that I started using Logic full time, so I know it reasonably well and definitely have a certain way of working that’s very Logic-based!

I realise that learning DP again will be hard, but I’m going to spend some time trying. It may turn out that Logic wins (for me) again, but at the moment DP is looking very good.

@Michael: Good to hear! I seem to remember that the time stretching algorithm in DP6 was only so so. Worked well sometimes, but not always. Well, that’s my memory of it, anyway. DP7 could well be different. I also remember that the track routing and the multi-timbral instrument handling are so much better in DP than Logic.

@Shooshie: Hello! Thanks for the info. I have been using VE Pro very successfully with Logic (both to servers on the same machine and to slave computers). I’m also aware of Konakt and VSL using memory servers to circumvent the 4Gb limit (although I think each instance still takes a portion of DP’s 4Gb). Omnisphere/Trilian work the same way. It’s good to know that these techniques also work in DP!

I use Plogue Bidule and I know some respected members here who will remain unnamed (Frodo) who use VE Pro, but with DP going 64 bit (discussed ad naseum elsewhere in this arena since the NAMM announcement) both apps may be unnecessary. DP should be able to host all your instruments nicely by the "Spring awakening" of MOTU into the world of 64 bit and Windows.

Nice picture, BTW. Putting a face and a real name is most welcome. I use my real name (see my website) but my face could stop a clock, so I have a surrogate which represents my true personality...

Of course, any very large template will require lots and lots of RAM and which VIs you use can also be a factor. Obviously, the bigger the RAM footprint, usually the better the sounds. Then again, one can also do a lot with a little if an efficient approach is used.

Please stop by the composing and showcase areas as well. I LOVE having real people around although I have to admit I don't know a crochet from a hemi-demi-semi- quaver.

ps- Rather than do 7.24 in DP, you might want to wait a few weeks and just go to DP 8 (although 7.24 is pretty solid ). What notation program do you use? Finale here.

I'd get 7.24 right away in case there are teething problems with 8.

I disagree I think Tyrone getting back into DP7.24 makes sense.
I expect it will probably take take a few revisions of DP8 to get up to the level of reliability we enjoy in 7.24,he will spend the same amount of $$ and he will have a stable choice to use until DP8 is fully operational.
Tyrone demands and deserves a great fully functional tool!

The cutoff for free upgrades to 8 was Jan 19.

they are also now developing sump lite, somehow it's going to be filtered with the same 64bit process and somehow they will put it into a 32bit can and it's supposed to be just as tasty

If you read about DP7 here, you will see it is very solid and people are happy with it. If DP8 is as good that will be cool.

Tyrone! Buddy! Ain't seen you here since September '88, and I did miss you man. What happened to the suit? LOL I dug the air of professionalism your old avatar exuded, as you'd remember.

I also remember that you were unhappy with the efficiency with which DP (6?) hosted VIs. I still haven't used them, but it seems there should be some gains there from DP8's 64 bittedness. Further, and I've not heard anyone discuss this yet, I have to believe MOTU's been working on DP's instrument collection and as it's been an insufferably long time since the suite was introduced with DP5, that a substantial update is imminent. I mention this because although it'd be impossible to quantify at this point, I'd factor in a meaningful update in this regard in the nearish future, perhaps even with DP8 as a "last-minute" sweetener.

Obviously, I hope you end up loving DP and staying for good this time; you know there's plenty o' love for you right here (points to head in order to avoid any misunderstanding!). Go you good thing, Tyrone, and welcome bro'!
