Hello everyone,

It has been some time since I last logged in and/or read posts. Unfortunately, recent events have made me seek a mobile setup. Actually, I needed to be more mobile to fly to Detroit more often and take care of business for a sick Uncle.

Any way I sold my G5 and upgraded to an Intel MacBook and updated my Software.

I must admit that the performance of the G5 was amazing. Im just not sure what to expect from this new system. Listed below are the old and new systems:

Old Studio Setup:

PowerMac Dual 2.0GHz, 3GB Ram, 150GB Internal Drive, Mac OS 10.5.8
MOTU 828mkII Audio / MIDI Interface
Glyph GT050 120GB FW
Glyph GT050Q 250GB, FW 400/800, eSATA, USB2
MOTU Digital Performer 5.01
Machfive 2.0
Melodyne Editor 1.1.5
Waves NGB 5.0
BIAS Peak 6.2
Mackie HR 824 mk2

New Studio Setup:

MacBook 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2, 4GB Ram, 80GB Internal Drive, Mac OS 10.5.8
MOTU 828mkII Audio / MIDI Interface
Glyph GT050 120GB FW
Glyph GT050Q 250GB, FW 400/800, eSATA, USB2
MOTU Digital Performer 7.24
Machfive 3.0
Melodyne Editor 1.1.5
Waves GOLD V8
BIAS Peak 6.2
Mackie HR 824 mk2

Any and All feedback is welcomed with an open mind. I just want to know I made a good step in the right direction.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

RJ

You should love the new system. Unless there are other apps (like Photoshop, other Adobe stuff, MS Office, Quicken) that you cannot upgrade I'd suggestion going to Snow Leopard if possible. I see you have some external hard drives. Good move! Even a small Lacie would be good on the road. I'd try to keep projects and samples, etc., off the internal drive if possible.

Thank You MIDI Life Crisis:

I do have Office 2008 and another program called Mixed in Key that I never used, but outside of that I have only music software. I will look into the LaCie Drive for Traveling.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! so much for responding.

Office 2008 works in Snow Leopard and Lion as does Photoshop Elements 6. I don't know about Peak 6.2.

Your external enclosures will be fine with larger drives when it comes time to upgrade.

At some oint, you will want to upgrade to a larger internal HD. If your MacBook has a card slot, an eSATA card would be my next choice - this will make one of your external drives much faster.

Mike is right. MS Office does work in SL - although the newer version is much better for my and my wife's work. Adobe Creative Suite needs a more recent version for Lion as well but I think it does work in SL OK but with some weirdness from time to time. I bumped it to CS 5 and like it a lot. It's also much faster but that may also be the difference between my old G5 Dual 2.0 and a Mac Pro 8 Core at 3.2. I was thinking of my eventual move to Lion regarding Office and Quicken.

MIDI Life Crisis & Mikehalloran,

Thank you for your comments. My office suite and Peak works fine on Leopard. Since the system is working fine, I dare make any changes.....

As for a card slot, I don't have one. However, I would like to invest in a larger internal drive. It would be nice to have my entire M5 library at my fingertips.

It may take a short while before I do any more upgrades. So for now I'm very happy my system is up to par.

Thank you so much.

RJ

>although the newer version (Office 2011) is much better for my and my wife's work. <

Office 2011 launches much faster in SL and Lion than Office 2008 - absolutely.

My employer uses some ancient version for Windows so I am tip-toeing gently into O.2011 but I am liking it. Tools are in different places et all - I'll get used to it soon enough.

My wife uses more of the features than I do but learning a new version... let's just say that I'd like one of my daughters to be up to speed and I want to be in another state when she makes the upgrade (for which I already have a license).
