Best app to make slideshow video to music?

I want to put a video up on YouTube. Nothing fancy. I'd like to find an app that would let me start with the music bed and then let me just add photos and have them change at a certain interval, and then save that as a video. I think iMovie had the "Ken Burns effect" or something where it would pan or make a movement across a photo. That might be cool. Any ideas. I do own iMovie and also the lower end Adobe Premier.

iMovie is great for doing slide shows. There may be other apps out there, but iMovie is quick and easy enough and free. If I were to buy anything, I would go for add-on effects because you could use up the default stuff pretty quickly, if they're used at all (like the notorious checkerboard wipe). I bought a bunch of plugins from geethree just to have some slicker effects to choose from.
For a list of different companies making iMovie plugins, check
HERE.
Here's something I've not used, but it's free. At least you can start your search. Just make sure that whatever plugins you use are compatible with your version of iMovie.
FWIW, we used iMovie for the visuals on both
Lord of the Rings Symphony and for
Passion Of The Christ Symphony live.

iDVD is a good choice, however, in my experience, iDVD is incapable of burning a movie with a soundtrack playlist. If you want a continuous soundtrack, you will have to merge many tracks into a single audio file with various and sundry applications.

The latest iMovie is very robust and is a whopping $14. Using precision edit mode you can easily fine tune your cut points.

Another vote for iMovie. I did a really nice piece for a client last year, having never done that kind of "slide show" before, and it was a cinch and turned out great.

I think you can even do that in iPhoto. If I remember correctly that is.

Keynote will do it also. Al Gore did "An Inconvenient Truth" in it. It has a number of effects not found in PowerPoint but you can save your whole presentation as PP.
When I heard both Gore and Ken Burns speak last year, they each discussed the projects they had done in Keynote.

Hopefully this isn't straying off topic, but I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions for the best way to deploy a slide show to an iPad.
Like JS, I want to have a slide show, but I want to be able to get it onto some other people's iPads - ideally without the need for them to have to install any extra software. I want to be able to embed some video/audio into the slides, and I also want to allow the viewer to control advancing the slides. I have searched high and low, and the closest I have come is Keynote, but that would require my intended audience to have Keynote installed, which is not ideal.
Any ideas?

Makes me wistful for the days of Macromind Director. You used to able to create "projector" files that were self contained. I used to fly on that thing. Used to.

I haven't had a chance yet to see whether Adobe Lightroom can sync to music, but I've certainly been happy with how easy it is to put together a slide show with that software.

Yeah - something like Director would be perfect. As it is, it looks as though I am going to have to build a mock-up in Keynote, then we are looking for someone to turn that into a packaged HTML 5 file, because then anybody with a browser (inc. Safari on an iPad) will be able to view it. This way, we'll get interactivity, full motion video/audio, as well as text, etc.
There are actually two ways to do this right now on-line, using
Prezi and
SlideRocket. Unfortunately, this won't work for my current purposes, there is a need for some confidentiality with the material. I wish someone would offer an off-line way to do the translation to HTML 5.
