Solved unusual noise, pops & clicks on desktop build

Post by jkruta »

Just might help someone out there..
I recently upgraded my old DAW to WinXP plus a new SATA drive/card, and Power supply (for the SATA power) with an older motherboard in order to install SONAR 8.5.
I immediately had a problem with noise in the system's audio using the PCI324 card. After changing everything (almost) back to the original system in order to discover the offending hardware/software, it came down to the new Power Supply. After reinstalling the old power supply, the noise went completely away.

I had originally thought that the noise was related to the WinXP install (originally Win2K)or on board video drivers. Upon installing an outboard video card, the noise remained and pops occurred during anytime the video window was changed from console view to track view and when starting or stopping the audio playback, etc. I changed back to Win2K and the new noise remained. It was only after reinstalling the original (old) power supply that all spurious noises stopped on all screen changes, audio playback, etc.

Just thought if anyone is having similar trouble and all else fails,if you have a spare power supply around, you might just give this a try as a last ditch effort.
