DIlemma! Mac Pro now or wait for Sandy Bridge iMac?

Hi all

I was going to buy one of the forthcoming 'Sandy Bridge' iMacs which are due in the next month or two and spec it as high as possible.

However, for tax reasons I may be forced to buy before the 5th April. So it looks as if my only current option is to get a MacPro. I have one on hold - Mac Pro 2.4GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon which has 2x 2.4GHz Quad-Core "Westmere" processors.

I already have a 23" Cinema Display but I was looking forward to running that alongside the 27" iMac Display.

Is this a good thing to do or should I take the tax hit and wait? What's the verdict on this particular MacPro configuration? (I know the Hex cores are probably preferable but I have a good price on this Quad core)

I'm running DP and all the usual Plugs & VI's etc

Thanks in advance for any opinions

Get the Westmere Mac Pro. You can easily add more RAM, hard drives, PCI cards, etc.

I've always loved the big Macs but, assuming it comes with Thunderport (or whatever it's called), the next iMac will be the first iMac that offers expandability suitable for pro work. And Sandy Bridge smokes... check out Digilloyd's comparisons between the current Mac Pro and the latest Macbook Pro quad.

What is the big boost with Sandybridge - other than making laptop graphics much better?

I recently bought an iMac i7 and had the $169 eSATA mod done by OWC. It rocks and I am quite happy with it for DP.

Based on what I know, I would recommend the big iron (OK, the big aluminum) if you have the budget for it and can benefit tax-wise. Expandability etc. are nice to have.

Had I the budget for a new tower and monitor, I would have done so but having a kid in school overseas and this and that, just wasn't possible. I don't regret the decision but, had I a bigger budget...
